  1. 1. Formulation and characterization of W/O nano-dispersions for bioactive delivery applications

    Author : Maria D. Chatzidaki; Aris Xenakis; Bert van Bavel; Werner Kunz; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nano-dispersions; encapsulation; food; DLS; EPR; Cryo-TEM; SAXS; pH-stat; digestion; antioxidants; gastric lipase; pancreatic lipase; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The main objective of this study was the formulation of food-grade water-in-oil (W/O) nano-dispersions based mainly on medium or long-chain triglycerides. Two types of dispersions were formulated and structurally compared, namely emulsions and microemulsions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mesoporous Silica Particles for a Potential Therapeutic Application

    Author : Muhammad Naeem Iqbal; Niklas Hedin; Tore Bengtsson; Mirva Eriksson; Jessica Rosenholm; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mesoporous silica; SBA-15; amylase; lipase; electron microscope; adsorption; type 2 diabetes; materialkemi; Materials Chemistry;

    Abstract : Mesoporous silica particles (MSPs) have a high surface area, pore volume, and tunable pore size and surface properties, which makes them ideal for advanced therapeutic, biocatalytic, separation, and drug delivery applications. The work in this thesis shows that MSPs can be employed for therapeutic applications with minimal risk of adverse consequences. READ MORE

  3. 3. Interaction of Triglyceride-rich Lipoproteins with Platelets and Vitamin K-dependent Coagulation Factors

    Author : Ning Xu; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Triglycerides.; Prothrombin; Protein S; Protein C; Platelets; Phospholipids; Metabolism; Lipoproteins; Lipids; Endocytosis; Electron microscopy; Cytochemistry; Coronary heart disease; Blood coagulation factors; Arachidonic acid; Atherosclerosis; Clinical chemistry; Klinisk kemi; Haematology; extracellular fluids; Hematologi; extracellulära vätskor;

    Abstract : 1. During incubation of platelets with 3H-arachidonic acid (20:4, n-6) and 14C-cholesterol doubly labelled and colloidal gold labelled chylomicrons (CMs) and chylomicron remnants (CMRs) CMs were taken up more efficiently than CMRs. Addition of unlabelled CMs, VLDLs, LDLs and HDLs decreased the uptake of labelled CMs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Regulation of Lipoprotein Lipase Activity : an In-vitro Study of a Complex and Dynamic System

    Author : Oleg Kovrov; Gunilla Olivecrona; Aivar Lookene; Mikael Larsson; Geesje Dallinga-Thie; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Triglyceride Metabolism; Lipoprotein lipase; Angiopoietin-Like Proteins; Apolipoproteins; Isothermal titration calorimetry; Biochemistry; biokemi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The progress of human society outpaces our biological evolution, and this brings unexpected health problems. The industrial revolution brought up dramatic changes in nutrition and lifestyle – we are increasingly shifting towards a nutrient-rich Western-patterned diet and to a sedentary lifestyle. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structure and Dynamics in Amphiphilic Bilayers: NMR and MD simulation Studies

    Author : Tiago Ferreira; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to study molecular structure and dynamics in amphiphilic bilayers. This thesis reports on method development and practical applications to two types of bilayer systems: simple cell membrane models composed of phosphatidylcholine lipids and cholesterol; and liquid crystals composed of ethyleneoxide-based surfactants often used in technological applications and in fundamental studies of amphiphile self-assembly.
