  1. 1. A Genetic Survey of the Pathogenic Parasite Trypanosoma cruzi

    Author : Anh-Nhi Tran; Lena Åslund; John Kelly; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; Trypanosoma cruzi; Chagas ; gene discovery; EST; sequencing; DGC3; repeats; gene family; CL Brener; trypanothione synthetase; TcTRS locus; alleles; polymorphism; RNA-binding protein; TcPTB; stage-specific expression; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik; medicinsk genetik; Medical Genetics;

    Abstract : Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas´ disease, is an evolutionarily ancient species with distinct biological and immunological characteristics. A fundamental understanding of the basic biology of the parasite is necessary in order to develop reliable therapeutic and prophylactic agents against T. cruzi. We have, as a part of the T. 2. 2. Targeting the nucleotide metabolism of the mammalian pathogen Trypanosoma brucei

    Author : Munender Vodnala; Anders Hofer; Arne Holmgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Trypanosoma brucei; adenosine kinase; thymidine kinase; methylthioadenosine phosphorylase; mouser ribonucleotide reductase; E. coli ribonucleotide reductase; RNR; Ara-A; F-Ara-A; dNTP; NTP; doexynucleotide metabolism; nucleosides; nucleoside kinases; allosteric regulation; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Abstract : Trypanosoma brucei causes African sleeping sickness in humans and Nagana in cattle. There are no vaccines available against the disease and the current treatment is also not satisfactory because of inefficacy and numerous side effects of the used drugs.T. READ MORE

  3. 3. Immunobiochemical significance of Trypanosoma rangeli in the study of Trypanosoma cruzi

    Author : Azael Patiño Saldaña; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Trypanosoma rangeli is a haemoflagellate that infects humans nonpathogenicallyin some areas in which T. cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease, is endemic.Since common biological and immunochemical characteristics have been described forthese parasites, a detailed study of their relationship is needed. 4. 4. Salvage and de novo synthesis of nucleotides in Trypanosoma brucei and mammalian cells

    Author : Artur Fijolek; Lars Thelander; Arne Holmgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nucleotides; ribonucleotide reductase; Ara-A; p53R2; Trypanosoma brucei; African sleeping sickness; trypanosomiasis; CTP synthetase; adenosine kinase; acivicin; adenine arabinoside; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : All living cells are dependent on nucleic acids for their survival. The genetic information stored in DNA is translated into functional proteins via a messenger molecule, the ribonucleic acid (RNA). Since DNA and RNA can be considered as polymers of nucleotides (NTPs), balanced pools of NTPs are crucial to nucleic acid synthesis and repair. READ MORE

  5. 5. Trypanosoma cruzi genome plasticity and evolution

    Author : Carlos Talavera-López; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan from the Kinetoplastidae family, is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, a major public health problem affecting mostly the poorest areas of Latin America. Due to the complex nature of the parasite’s genome it has been impossible to produce a complete reference genome sequence, thus hampering the implementation of post- genomic approaches to unveil the mechanisms of generation of antigenic variation and the identification of new drug targets.
