11. Genome and transcriptome studies of the protozoan parasites Trypanosoma cruzi and Giardia intestinalis
Abstract : Trypanosoma cruzi and Giardia intestinalis are two human pathogens and protozoan parasites responsible for the diseases Chagas disease and giardiasis, respectively. Both diseases cause su ering and illness in several million individuals. READ MORE

12. Synthesis of inositolphosphoglycans found in Trypanosoma cruzi and development of novel carbohydrate monomolecular layers
Abstract : In this thesis, synthetic carbohydrate chemistry has been utilized to contribute to the fundamental understanding of three biological relevant areas. These include parasite cell-membrane glycoconjugates, protein-resistant surfaces and antifreeze glycoproteins. READ MORE

13. Circadian rhythm dysfunction in the suprachiasmatic nucleus : effects of Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection and inflammatory cytokines
Abstract : Alterations in the mammalian circadian pacemaker, the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), were studied in an experimental rat model of African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, caused by infections with subspecies of Trypanosoma brucei (T b). Characteristic signs of the disease are marked disturbances in circadian rhythms, such as a fragmentation of the sleep-wake cycle. READ MORE

14. Genome characterisation and mobility investigation in trypanosomes
Abstract : Trypanosomes are uni-flagellated protozoa responsible for some of the most debilitating human infections such as Chagas disease (Trypanosoma cruzi) and sleeping sickness (Trypanosoma brucei). Unravelling their genome organisation and their biology would improve our basic knowledge and could contribute to find new drug target specific to the species. READ MORE

15. Methods and applications in DNA sequence alignments
Abstract : DNA sequence alignment is one of the most common bioinformatics tasks. Alignment analysis for eukaryotic genomes is challenging because the datasets are large. Repeat sequences also make the analysis difficult. This thesis describes new methods which we have developed for DNA sequence alignment that address these problems. READ MORE
