11. Mechanisms of immune escape in EBV associated malignancies : Hodgkin's disease and Burkitt's lymphoma
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is focused on the analysis of the mechanisms operating in the immune escape of two Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated tumors: Hodgkin's Disease (HD) and Burkitt's lymphoma (BL). EBV positive HD tumor cells express at least 3 viral proteins: the EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA)1, the latent membrane proteins (LMP)1 and LMP2A. READ MORE

12. Engineering strategies for ABD-derived affinity proteins for therapeutic and diagnostic applications
Abstract : Small stable protein domains are attractive scaffolds for engineering affinity proteins due to their high tolerance to mutagenesis without loosing structural integrity. The albuminbinding domain is a 5 kDa three-helix bundle derived from the bacterial receptor Protein G with low-nanomolar affinity to albumin. READ MORE

13. Regulatory T cells : molecular and clinical aspects
Abstract : In the immune system’s tug of war with cancer, tolerance mechanisms by which the tumor can control anti-tumor immune responses play a central role in determining the outcome. Regulatory T cells (Treg) induced in the thymus or the periphery, represent one such tolerance mechanism that potentially can be exploited by developing tumors. READ MORE

14. In vivo bioluminescence imaging in preclinical trials of genetic vaccines
Abstract : DNA immunization is a rapidly developing vaccine platform for infectious diseases, cancer and allergies. The efficiency of DNA vaccination is largely determined by the efficiency of delivery and subsequent expression of genes encoding microbial and tumor antigens or allergens in the cells of vaccine recipients. 15. Analysis and manipulation of autoreactive and tumor-specific T cell responses
Abstract : The focus of this work has been on the analysis and manipulation of T cell responses. One emphasis has been on T cells involved in autoimmune diabetes and another on T cells in tumor immunity. Primary activation of T cells as well as the role of the proteasome in T cell responses has been overlapping themes. READ MORE
