11. Microscopic Modeling of Exciton Propagation and Dissociation in Two-Dimensional Materials
Abstract : Atomically thin materials have been in the spotlight of research during the last decade due to their exceptional properties, providing a platform for the study of novel physical phenomena. In particular, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have emerged as promising atomically thin materials for future optoelectronic applications owing to their strong light-matter interaction and their high tunability. 12. Superradiant THz wave emission from arrays of Josephson junctions
Abstract : High-power, continuous-wave, compact and tunable THz sources are needed for a large variety of applications. Development of power-efficient sources of electromagnetic radiation in the 0.1-10 THz range is a difficult technological problem, known as the “THz gap. READ MORE

13. Electronic materials : growth and characterisation
Abstract : In this thesis the InSb(111), InAs(111) and GaSb(001) surfaces have been studied by means of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy based upon the femtosecond laser system. The pump-and-probe technique allows to analyse both electron states in the valence band and normally unpopulated electron states above the valence band, which can be occupied by transiently excited carriers at the optically pumped surface. 14. Growth and Characterisation of Non-linear Ferroelectric Heterostructures
Abstract : High dielectric constant or ferroelectric materials are needed for a range of devices, non-volatile ferroelectric computer memories, NVFRAMs, microwave devices utilising the non-linear polarisation as a function of electric field, or other microwave applications. High dielectric constant and low losses can be achieved in single crystals of ferroelectrics. READ MORE

15. Characterization of (Ba,Sr)TiO3 thin films for multiplier applications
Abstract : (Ba,Sr)TiO3 (BSTO) and SrTiO3 (STO) parallel plate ferroelectric varactors are investigated for microwave multiplier applications.STO and BSTO exhibit low losses, high permittivity and largetunability of both permittivity and losses. All films are deposited using Pulsed Laser Deposition, magnetron sputtering and E-beam evaporation. READ MORE
