  2. 2. Parity Effects in Single Charge Tunneling

    Author : Magnus Gisselfält; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mesoscopic; single charge tunneling; photon-assisted tunneling; shot noise; SET transistor; parity effect; Andreev tunneling; Coulomb blockade;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is single charge tunneling effects, especially parity effects, as they are manifested in quantum mechanical tunneling through a metallic island small enough to cause single electrons to block tunneling of other electrons due to Coulomb interaction. When the island is superconducting the ground state energy depends on the parity of the number of electrons on the island: outside of the condensate there will always be at least one electron contributing to the energy for an odd number of electrons and this will have observable consequences. 3. 3. Risk Management in Tunneling Projects : Estimation and Planning

    Author : Mohammad Mohammadi; Johan Spross; Fredrik Johansson; Stefan Larsson; Anna Kadefors; Amund Bruland; KTH; []
    Keywords : Cost overrun; Transport infrastructure projects; Time and cost estimation; Probabilistic approaches; Tunneling; Soil and Rock Mechanics; Jord- och bergmekanik;

    Abstract : Cost overruns and schedule delays are frequently observed occurrences in the construction of transport infrastructure projects. Such phenomena lead to the mismanagement of significant amounts of both public and private resources. READ MORE

    Abstract : This thesis concerns different kinds of tunneling based devices all showing negative differential resistance. The thesis is divided in three parts, resonant tunneling transistors, Esaki diodes and coupled zero dimensional systems. READ MORE

  5. 5. Resonant Tunneling in Laterally Confined Quantum Structures

    Author : Boel Gustafson; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gravitation; relativity; quantum mechanics; classical mechanics; Mathematical and general theoretical physics; Fysik; Physics; High peak-to-valley ratio; Lateral confinement; Quantum dots; Resonant tunneling; Self-assembled quantum dots; Schottky depletion; Buried metal gate; Electron transport; Magnetic-field dependence; Energy level width; Tunneling transistors; Mode coupling; statistical physics; thermodynamics; Matematisk och allmän teoretisk fysik; klassisk mekanik; kvantmekanik; relativitet; statistisk fysik; termodynamik; Technological sciences; Teknik; Fysicumarkivet A:2001:Gustafson;

    Abstract : In the thesis, three-dimensionally confined resonant tunneling structures were studied experimentally. Two approaches were used for obtaining quantum confinement: gate-defined lateral constriction of double barrier structures, and epitaxial growth of self-assembled quantum dots. READ MORE
