2. The mechanical wear of tuyere refractory and stirring plugs in BOF steelmaking
Abstract : Water modelling investigations of pressure change at tuyere tip or back attack and wear of H3B03 disks, as well as high temperature modelling wear tests of BOF refractory using single- or double-tuyere and Ar or N2 gas, have been carried out to study mechanisms for mechanical wear of the refractory for BOF stirring tuyeres and plugs. A new nominal Mach number, M*', was defined and adopted as the criterion for correlating test data. READ MORE

3. Technology, Ideology and Environment : The Social Dynamics of Iron Metallurgy in Great Zimbabwe, AD 900 to the Present
Abstract : This thesis provides insights into the nature and organization of iron technology associated with past and present communities of Great Zimbabwe in southern Africa. Written accounts, ethnographic enquiries and, results of archaeological field surveys and excavations are combined to provide the first detailed account of Great Zimbabwe’s iron production technologies. 4. Mathematical Model of the Solid Flow Behavior in a Real Dimension Blast Furnace
Abstract : A mathematical model based on the continuum mechanic concept has been developed to describe the profile of solid particles in an industrial scale blast furnace. The focus is the in-furnace conditions and its characteristics such as the shape and size of the deadman. READ MORE

5. Recycling of Blast Furnace Sludge within the Integrated Steel Plant : Potential for Complete Recycling and Influence on Operation
Abstract : Ore-based steelmaking generates various residues including dust, sludges, scales and slags. Internal and external recycling has allowed for 68-90 % of the dust, sludges and scales to be recycled. However, several residues are landfilled despite containing elements valuable as raw material in the production of steel. READ MORE
