  1. 1. The role of the Type IV pili system in the virulence of Francisella tularensis

    Author : Emelie Salomonsson; Åke Forsberg; Jean-Pierre Gorvel; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Francisella tularensis; tularemia; bacterial pathogenesis; Type IV pili; Type II secretion; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; PilA; RD18; RD19; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative intracellular pathogen causing the zoonotic disease tularemia. F. tularensis can be found almost all over the world and has been recovered from several animal species, even though the natural reservoir of the bacterium and parts of its life cycle are still unknown. 2. 2. Assessment and Treatment of Impaired Insulin- Secretion and Action in Type 2 Diabetes

    Author : Mozhgan Dorkhan; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 2 diabetes; insulin secretion; glucagon test; insulin resistance; insulin glargine; insulin tolerance test; thiazolidinediones; natriuretic peptides; adiponectin; thyroid associated ophthalmopathy; proinsulin;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a disease characterised by varying degrees of defect in insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity and associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Optimal glycaemic control reduces the progression of diabetic complications. READ MORE

  3. 3. New aspects of voltage-gated calcium channel regulation in pancreatic beta-cells - Relevance for insulin release and type 2 diabetes

    Author : Thomas Reinbothe; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; voltage-gated calcium channels; L-type; insulin secretion; type 2 diabetes;

    Abstract : Voltage-gated Ca2+ channels are essential transducers of cellular signals in many electrically excitable cells. In the pancreatic beta-cell they mediate controlled Ca2+ influx, which is the final trigger for Ca2+ dependent release (exocytosis) of the blood glucose lowering hormone insulin. READ MORE

  4. 4. Immunoregulatory differences between adult onset type 1 diabetes and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA)

    Author : Magnus Hillman; Lund Medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi; diabetology; secreting systems; Isotype class switch; Endocrinology; LADA; Autoantibodies; Autoimmunity; Type 1 diabetes;

    Abstract : Autoimmune diabetes is characterized by cell mediated autoimmunity against insulin producing beta cells in pancreatic islets. Type 1 diabetes is the major cause of diabetes in children and adolescents and is believed to be mediated by a Thl driven destruction of beta cells. READ MORE

  5. 5. ADP regulation of insulin secretion and beta-cell apoptosis

    Author : Chanyuan Tan; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; P2Y; β-cell; ADP; insulin; apoptosis; autocrine; ectonucleotidase;

    Abstract : The aims of this dissertation were to investigate the effects of extracellular purines on insulin secretion, and apoptosis in mouse pancreatic islets and β-cells; to examine if high glucose and free fatty acids induces β-cell apoptosis via autocrine effects of ADP acting on the P2Y13 receptor; and to investigate the modulation of extracellular purines in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) through ectonucleotidase or ATP release under the effect of high glucose. The expression of the ADP receptors P2Y1 and P2Y13 were shown in both mouse pancreatic islets and isolated β-cells using real-time PCR quantification. READ MORE
