  1. 11. Redox Chemistry in Radiation Induced Dissolution of Spent Nuclear Fuel : from Elementary Reactions to Predictive Modeling

    Author : Olivia Roth; Mats Jonsson; David W. Shoesmith; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nuclear chemistry; Kärnkemi;

    Abstract : The focus of this doctoral thesis is the redox chemistry involved in radiation induced oxidative dissolution of spent nuclear fuel and UO2 (as a model substance for spent nuclear fuel). It is shown that two electron oxidants are more efficient than one electron oxidants in oxidative dissolution of UO2 at low oxidant concentrations. READ MORE

  2. 12. Radiation induced dissolution of model compounds for spent nuclear fuel : mechanistic understanding of oxidative dissolution and its inhibition

    Author : Sara Nilsson; Mats Jonsson; Lara Duro; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis is focused on radiation induced oxidative dissolution of UO2, Pd-doped UO2, SIMFUEL (as model substances for spent nuclear fuel) and UN (a possible future fuel) and inhibition of the oxidative dissolution. H2O2 is assumed to be the most important oxidant for spent nuclear fuel dissolution under deep repository conditions. READ MORE

    Author : Sawsan El Jamal; Mats Jonsson; Mats Johnsson; Claire Corkhill; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; UC; UN; UO2; gamma radiolysis; oxidative dissolution; H2O2; studtite; additive; UC; UN; UO2; gammaradiolys; oxidativ upplösning; H2O2; studtite; additiv; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Nuclear power produces a large portion of the electricity worldwide. It has been the largest low-carbon energy source for more than 30 years and has played an essential role in the security of energy supplies for many countries. READ MORE

  4. 14. Experimental studies of radiation-induced dissolution of UO2 : The effect of intrinsic solid phase properties and external factors

    Author : Alexandre Barreiro Fidalgo; Mats Jonsson; David Shoesmith; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oxidation; dissolution; uranium dioxide; gadolinium; bentonite; sulfide; hydrogen; gamma radiation; radiolysis; hydrogen peroxide; hydroxyl radical; repository; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Dissolution of the UO2 matrix is one of the potential routes for radionuclide release in a future deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel. This doctoral thesis focuses on interfacial reactions of relevance in radiation-induced dissolution of UO2 and is divided in two parts:In the first part, we sought to explore the effects of solid phase composition:The impact of surface stoichiometry on the reactivity of UO2 towards aqueous radiolytic oxidants was studied. 5. 15. Extension of the Pressure Time Method to 3-Dimensional Flows

    Author : Mehrdad Kalantar Neyestanaki; Michel Cervantes; Pontus Jonsson; Georgiana Dunca; Thomas Staubli; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Strömningslära; Fluid Mechanics;

    Abstract : Hydropower has stood as a clean and sustainable energy source since the late 19th century. Many turbines were built 50 to 70 years ago and require refurbishment. It is important to assess the efficiency of turbines before and after refurbishment to meet performance guarantees .However, the flow rate makes such estimation challenging. READ MORE
