  1. 1. First-pass Intestinal Metabolism of Drugs : Experiences from in vitro, in vivo and simulation studies

    Author : Helena Anna Thörn; Hans Lennernäs; Paul Alfred Dickinson; Brian Houston; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacokinetics; metabolism; CYP3A4; CYP2C9; CYP2D6; UGT; glucuronidation; physiologically based pharmacokinetic model; modelling; Biopharmaceutics; Biofarmaci;

    Abstract : The bioavailability of a drug can be described as the fraction of an orally administered dose that reaches the systemic circulation and is often limited by first-pass metabolism in the gut and the liver. It is important to have knowledge about these processes since the systemic blood drug concentration is tightly connected to the effect of the drug. READ MORE

  2. 2. Annotating and making use of the Avena sativa cv. Sang reference genome

    Author : Nikos Tsardakas Renhuldt; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oats; Avena sativa; genomics; genome annotation; gene mapping; mapping-by-sequencing; brassinosteroids; Fusarium; genetic markers; GFViz; GSK3; UGT; cereals; epicuticular wax; plant genomics; marker visualization; AsGSK2.1; AsCer-q;

    Abstract : Oats is an important cereal used for both food and feed. The topic of this thesis is the annotation of the genome of oat (Avena sativa) cv. Sang, as well as some of the things this genome and its annotation have been used for. READ MORE

  3. 3. In vivo Pharmacokinetic Interactions of Finasteride and Identification of Novel Metabolites

    Author : Anna Lundahl; Hans Lennernäs; Dennis A Smith; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; drug-drug interactions; herb-drug interactions; pharmacokinetics; metabolism; CYP3A4; hydroxylation; glucuronidation; UGT enzymes; mass spectrometry; biliary excretion; urinary excretion; finasteride; PHARMACY; FARMACI;

    Abstract : The general aim of this thesis was to improve the understanding of the in vivo pharmacokinetics and, in particular, the metabolism of finasteride, a 5α-reductase inhibitor used in the treatment of enlarged prostate glands and male pattern baldness. CYP3A4 has been identified as the major enzyme involved in the sequential metabolism of finasteride to ω-OH finasteride (M1) and ω-COOH finasteride (M3). READ MORE

  4. 4. Human liver in vitro models for evaluation of drug metabolism and disposition

    Author : Malin Darnell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The administrated dose of a drug is adjusted to give a therapeutic effect in patients without causing side-effects or toxicity. Cytochrome P450 (P450) and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) enzymes, uptake and efflux transporters and nuclear receptors regulating these enzymes, expressed in the liver and in other tissues, are all important players in drug metabolism, disposition and elimination. 5. 5. Genital tract CD4+ T cells for vaccination and protection against Chlamydia trachomatis

    Author : Ellen Marks; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Chlamydia; T cell differentiation; genital tract; vaccination; costimulation; Th1; Th2; Th17; Tregs;

    Abstract : Vaccination strategies for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are lacking due to an incomplete understanding of genital tract T cell responses. This thesis dissects the generation of T helper subsets, including the recently discovered Th17 subset, during genital tract infection with a common sexually transmitted pathogen, Chlamydia trachomatis, and addresses vaccine requirements for the generation of genital tract CD4+ T cell immunity.
