  1. 1. Role of POU/Oct transcription factors in Drosophila immunity

    Author : Widad Dantoft; Ylva Engström; Anne Uv; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antimicrobial peptides; Drosophila; host-pathogen interaction; immune gene expression; immune signaling; NF-kB; microbiota; POU Oct transcription factors; protein degradation; stress response; transcriptional regulation; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : In response to infection, Drosophila melanogaster relies on the ability to mount a robust and potent innate immune response, characterized by induction of cellular and humoral processes. While rapid immune induction is of utmost importance, it is equally important to restrict and repress immune gene expression, where and when it is not needed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Enhancing UV-protection of clear coated wood by utilizing reactive UV-absorber and epoxyfunctionalized soybean oil

    Author : Sara Olsson; Mats KG Johansson; Emma Östmark; Mats Westin; Philip Evans; Minna Hakkarainen; Peter Weissenborn; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; UV-protaction; wood; clear coating; UV absorber; epoxy functionalized soybean oil; grafting;

    Abstract : This work presents the development of a new pretreatment for clear coated wood, that aims to increase the photoprotection of exterior wood products, and at the same time make the system more environmentally friendly. The pretreatment comprises the reactive UV absorber 2-hydroxy-4(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-benzophenone (HEPBP), which has a primary epoxy group that can be covalently attached to the hydroxyl groups of the wood substrate. Abstract : Malignant melanoma arises from the pigment producing melanocytes in epidermis and is the most aggressive type of skin cancer. The incidence of malignant melanoma is increasing faster than any other type of cancer in white population worldwide, with a doubling rate every 10-20 years. READ MORE

    Abstract : Air pollution is a major concern in developed countries due to its hazardous health effects. Recent studies by the WHO (World Health Organization) estimate that urban air pollution causes a number of diseases of the respiratory tract and is associated with 150,000 deaths each year. Abstract : Polymeric materials are found in virtually all areas of daily life; they are found in everything from packages keeping our food safe to the buildings where we spend our days, and the production is a worldwide industry. Although polymeric materials play a big part in sustainable solution’s, a lot can be done to develop more environmental methods for producing them. READ MORE
