  1. 1. Structural studies on the integral membrane protein, ubiquinol oxidase from Escherichia coli

    Author : Jeff Abramson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; crystal structure; ubiquinol oxidase; membrane protein; oxidases; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Heme-copper oxidases are redox-driven proton pumps that couple the reduction of molecular oxygen to water with the vectorial translocation of protons across the membrane. The proton gradient generated by heme-copper oxidases and the other members of the aerobic respiratory chain is ultimately used to drive the synthesis of ATP. READ MORE

  2. 2. Oxidative stress and mitochondrial function : role of ubiquinol as antioxidant

    Author : Patrik Andrée; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Over the last three decades it has been established that biquinone (coenzyme Q), in addition to its function as an electron and proton carrier in the respiratory chain, acts in its reduced form (ubiquinol) as an antioxidant. The main theme of this thesis is a study of the antioxidant function of ubiquinol in preparations of beef heart submitochondrial particles, which consist of inverted vesicular fragments of the inner mitochondrial membrane. 3. 3. Regeneration of the antioxidant ubiquinol by flavoenzymes and the role of antioxidant defence in experimental hepatocarcinogenesis

    Author : Ling Xia; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In the environment, to which we have adapted and thrive, we are constantly exposed to reactive molecules with the potential to cause intracellular damage and cellular malfunction. One of the molecules that is transformed to very reactive free radicals is oxygen that can give rise to a variety of reactive oxygen species formed in close vicinity to sensitive structures in different compartments of the cell. 4. 4. Structural studies on cytochrome bc1 complex from bovine heart mitochondria

    Author : Momi Iwata; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Ubiquinol:cytochrome c oxidoreductase; membrane protein; X-ray crystallography; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The cytochrome bc1 complex (Ubiquinol:Cytochrome c oxidoreductase or Complex III) is an enzyme of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, crucial for aerobic metabolism. This enzyme catalyses the electron transfer from membrane-bound ubiquinol to soluble cytochrome c. READ MORE

  5. 5. In vitro studies on the biosynthesis and reduction of ubiquinone

    Author : Tomas Nordman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : The mevalonate pathway; Ubiquinone; Ubiquinol; Lipoamide dehydrogenase; Thioredoxin reductase; Glutathione reductase; Selenium;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the role of ubiquinone, the only endogenously synthesised lipid soluble antioxidant, in the cellular defence against peroxidation of proteins and lipids. The aims of the present investigations were to study the biosynthesis of ubiquinone in two different organelle fractions, i.e. READ MORE
