1. Regulation of Drosophila Jun by phosphorylation and the ubiquitin system during eye development
Abstract : The goal of these studies has been to elucidate the biological relevance of post-translational modifications in the context of a living organism. The model system used is photoreceptor differentiation during development of the compound eye in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. READ MORE

2. Protein Quality Control at the Inner Nuclear Membrane – The Asi complex in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract : The nuclear envelope is a barrier comprised of outer and inner membranes that separate the cytoplasm from the nucleoplasm. The outer (ONM) and inner (INM) membranes have different physical characteristics and protein compositions. READ MORE

3. The p97 ATPase and the Drosophila Proteasome : Protein Unfolding and Regulation
Abstract : For all living systems, there is a requirement to recycle and regulate proteins. In eukaryotic organisms this is accomplished by the proteasome. The p97 ATPase is another highly conserved and essential complex present throughout the eukaryotic cell. READ MORE

4. Water and Protein Dynamics in Biological Systems Studied by Magnetic Relaxation Dispersion
Abstract : The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that the magnetic relaxation dispersion (MRD) technique can provide information of relevance to protein biophysics, magnetic resonance imaging and cell biology. By immobilizing proteins with covalent cross-links, intermittent protein dynamics on the previously inaccessible ns-µs time scale could be probed with MRD via the exchange of water molecules between internal cavities and the surrounding bulk solvent phase. 5. Novel Regulators of the TGF-β Signaling Pathway
Abstract : The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily consists of related multifunctional cytokines, which include TGF-βs, activins, and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and coordinate several biological responses in diverse cell types. The biological activity of TGF-β members is executed by transmembrane serine/threonine kinase receptors and intracellular Smad proteins. READ MORE
