1. On Estimation and Prediction in Linear Mixed Models : A new approach to studying equal BLUEs and BLUPs
Abstract : Linear mixed models (LMMs) are widely used to analyze repeated, longitudinal, or clustered data in many disciplines, such as biology, medicine, psychology, sociology, economics, etc. One of the essential components of a linear mixed model is its covariance structure, i.e. READ MORE

2. Some Contributions to Description and Validation of the Extreme Value Distribution
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the validation and description of the Gumbel distribution. Since this is a scale and location parameter distribution, the generalized least squares regression of the order statistics on the expected values can be used, without the necessity of iteration, to obtain the best linear unbiased estimates of the parameters. 3. Varince component estimation in geodetic networks
Abstract : A summary of some of the existing variance component estimators are given, namely the MINQE, the IMINQ, the general case of BQUNE (best Quardratic Unbiased Non negative Estimator), the Helmert estimators, the Förstner estimator and the Kubik estimator. A derivation of a special case of the BQUNE is made. READ MORE

4. Survey estimation for highly skewed data
Abstract : Estimation of the population total of a highly skewed survey variable from a small sample is problematic if straightforward methods are used since (i) when there are no extreme values in the sample, too small estimates will be obtained (ii) if extreme values are sampled, the estimates will become grotesquely large. Traditional methods for outlier treatment will usually compensate for outliers in the sample, thereby avoiding (ii), whereas the small negative bias of (i) will persist. READ MORE

5. Analysis of factorial experiments using mixed-effects models: options for estimation, prediction and inference
Abstract : In linear mixed-effects modelling of experiments, estimation of variance components, prediction of random effects, and computation of denominator degrees of freedom associated with inference on fixed effects, are important elements of the analysis. This thesis investigates alternatives to the likelihoodbased procedures for analysis of factorial experiments with normally distributed observations. READ MORE
