  1. 6. Topological and Scaling Analysis of Geospatial Big Data

    Author : Ding Ma; Bin Jiang; Shaowen Wang; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Third definition of fractal; scaling; topology; power law; head tail breaks; ht-index; complex network; geospatial big data; natural cities; natural streets; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development;

    Abstract : Geographic information science and systems face challenges related to understanding the instinctive heterogeneity of geographic space, since conventional geospatial analysis is mainly founded on Euclidean geometry and Gaussian statistics. This thesis adopts a new paradigm, based on fractal geometry and Paretian statistics for geospatial analysis. READ MORE

  2. 7. Settlement Scaling and Urban Infrastructure: A Comparative Approach to Settlements from the Ancient Indus society

    Author : Sidra Gulzar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Ganweriwala; Indus Society; Mesopotamia; Urban settlements; Infrastructure; Cholistan region; Diyala region;

    Abstract : The scope of the present thesis is to analyze the major variabilities among Indus settlements and urban infrastruc ture of the ancient Indus society during 2600-1900BCE. This includes the process of urbanization in relation with population, settled area, and location of the major urban centers. READ MORE

  3. 8. Urban poverty, social exclusion and social housing finance. The case of PRODEL in Nicaragua

    Author : Alfredo Stein; Boende och bostadsutveckling; []
    Keywords : Urban poverty; Microfinance; Social exclusion; Social housing finance; Central America; Asset accumulation; Infrastructure; Financial inclusion; Nicaragua; International donors;

    Abstract : The purpose of the thesis is to further understand key conceptual and operational challenges that international aid donors, and public and private institutions, face while designing and implementing alternative forms of social housing finance which aim to be inclusive for the urban poor. Based on an in-depth study of the work of the Foundation for the Promotion of Local Development (PRODEL) in three cities in Nicaragua during a period of 15 years, the thesis tries to answer three research questions: What are the constraints the urban poor face in financing the incremental way they build their individual housing and collective assets? Why does housing microfinance not always enhance inclusion of the urban poor? How does the tension between the goal of achieving financial sustainability and increasing financial inclusion affect the policy of international donors and governments, and the practice of local financial institutions? To answer these questions, the thesis adopts a realist approach as well as a critical case study method as used in disciplines such as political science and history to explain the trends and complexities of the phenomena investigated, and formulates an argument in the form of a proposition: if financial exclusion occurs in PRODEL it might also occur elsewhere. 4. 9. Multitemporal Spaceborne Polarimetric SAR Data for Urban Land Cover Mapping

    Author : Xin Niu; Yifang Ban; Paolo Gamba; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RADARSAT-2; spaceborne; polarimetric SAR; urban land cover; classification; Information technology; Informationsteknik;

    Abstract : Urban represents one of the most dynamic areas in the global change context. To support rational policies for sustainable urban development, remote sensing technologies such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) enjoy increasing popularity for collecting up-to-date and reliable information such as urban land cover/land-use. 5. 10. Living Structure for Understanding Human Activity Patterns Using Multi-Source Geospatial Big Data

    Author : Zheng Ren; Bin Jiang; Stefan Seipel; Itzhak Benenson; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; living structure; topological representation; human activities; natural cities; urban centres; complex network; head tail breaks; big data; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development;

    Abstract : Geographic space is not neutral or lifeless, but an intricate living structure composed of numerous small features and a few large ones across all scales. The living structure is crucial for comprehending how geographic space shapes human activities. READ MORE
