1. Realise the Potential! : Cost Effective and Energy Efficient District Heating in European Urban Areas
Abstract : The Member States of EU27 need to accelerate the integration of energy efficient technology solutions to reach the 20% energy efficiency target set for 2020. At current pace, projections indicate that only half of expected primary energy reductions will be reached. READ MORE

2. Exploring Typologies, Densities & Spatial Qualities : The Case of Low-Income Housing in South Africa
Abstract : This thesis focuses on problems that have resulted from the increasing pressure facing urban and suburban land use in South Africa, brought on by a number of different factors including the political and historical background of the country, as well as by rapid urbanization. The objective of this thesis is to present the perspectives applied in the analysis of the built environment in selected case studies, in which different theoretical and methodological approaches have been developed to address the research questions. 3. Housing clusters for densification within an upgrading strategy : the case of Kampala, Uganda
Abstract : The process of urbanisation in the urban centres of most sub-Saharan African countries has been brought about by numerous factors including rural to urban migration, natural increase in population, and in-migration. In Uganda due to these factors the capital city Kampala is growing rapidly. READ MORE

4. District heating in future Europe : Modelling expansion potentials and mapping heat synergy regions
Abstract : This thesis presents a set of methodologies and approaches to investigate and determine the extent by which district heating can contribute to improved energy system efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions in future Europe. The main motivation for suggesting large-scale implementation of district heating as a structural energy efficiency measure to obtain these objectives originates essentially in the predicament that a majority of European buildings today remain highly dependent on fossil fuels to provide energy needed for space heating and hot water preparation. 5. Computer Simulations in Materials Physics: Time-scales and Accuracy
Abstract : Computer simulations are expected to play an increasingly important role within materials physics in the future. Owing to a combination of accurate physical approximations, improved implementations of these approximations, and the exponentially increasing power of computers, problems can now be solved on length and time-scales which were unimaginable only a decade ago.
