1. Urban Area Information Extraction From Polarimetric SAR Data
Abstract : Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) has been used for various remote sensing applications since more information could be obtained in multiple polarizations. The overall objective of this thesis is to investigate urban area information extraction from PolSAR data with the following specific objectives: (1) to exploit polarimetric scattering model-based decomposition methods for urban areas, (2) to investigate effective methods for man-made target detection, (3) to develop edge detection and superpixel generation methods, and (4) to investigate urban area classification and segmentation. 2. Computational and spatial analyses of rooftops for urban solar energy planning
Abstract : In cities where land availability is limited, rooftop photovoltaic panels (RPVs) offer high potential for satisfying concentrated urban energy demand by using only rooftop areas. However, accurate estimation of RPVs potential in relation to their spatial distribution is indispensable for successful energy planning. READ MORE

3. Earth Observation based Monitoring of Urbanizationand Environmental Impact in Kigali, Rwanda
Abstract : Urbanization is one of the great challenges in the 21st century. Despite being an engine for the global economy, urban areas consume 78% of World's energy and emit more than 60% of greenhouse gas emission. Sub-SaharanAfrican cities, e.g. READ MORE

4. Satellite Monitoring of Urbanization and Indicator-based Assessment of Environmental Impact
Abstract : As of 2018, 55% of the world population resides in urban areas. This proportion is projected to increase to 68% by 2050 (United Nations 2018). The Stockholm region is no exception to this urbanizing trend: the population of Stockholm City has risen by 28% since the year 2000. READ MORE

5. Efficient Map Matching and Discovery of Frequent and Dominant Movement Patterns in GPS Trajectory Data
Abstract : The wide deployment of Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors for movement data collection has enabled a wide range of applications in transportation and urban planning. Frequent and dominant movement patterns embedded in GPS trajectory data provide valuable knowledge including the spatial and temporal distribution of frequent routes selected by the tracked objects and the regular movement behavior in certain regions.
