  1. 1. Characterization of human dopaminergic neurons in the developing mesencephalon and upon differentiation of stem cells- for replacement therapy in Parkinson´s disease

    Author : Jenny Nelander Wahlestedt; Utvecklings- och regenerativ neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Parkinson´s disease; stem cells; ventral mesencephalon; dopaminergic neurons; cell replacement therapy; human fetal tissue; radial glia; microRNA; BAC recombineering; reporter cell lines;

    Abstract : Cell-replacement therapy is a promising approach for treating patients with Parkinson ́s disease (PD). For this purpose, there is a need for developing a protocol that can generate high numbers of human transplantable mesencephalic dopaminer- gic (mesDA) neurons. READ MORE

  2. 2. Direct Conversion of Human Fibroblasts to Induced Neurons

    Author : Ulrich Pfisterer; Utvecklings- och regenerativ neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cellular Reprogramming; Direct Conversion; Human Induced Neurons; Dopaminergic; Cell Replacement Therapy; Lentiviral Vectors;

    Abstract : During direct cellular reprogramming, forced expression of key transcription factors (TFs) directly converts one terminally differentiated cell type into that of another fate, exemplified in this theses by the conversion of fibroblasts into functional induced neurons (iNs). Direct conversion of mouse fibroblasts to functional neurons was established in 2010, and the starting point of my doctoral thesis was the aim to transfer iN-technology to human cells and to explore the potential of this technique in regards to generate subtype-specific neurons as well as to use these cells for transplantation studies. 3. 3. Functional and Transcriptional Studies of Human Dopaminergic Neurons

    Author : Marcella Birtele; Utvecklings- och regenerativ neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dopaminergic Neurons; Cell reprogramming; Cell therapy; Induced neurons; In vitro reprogramming; In vivo reprogramming;

    Abstract : Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the most common movement disorder and second most common neurodegenerative disease. The principal hallmark of the pathology is represented by a loss of mesencephalic Dopaminergic neurons (mesDA) that reside in the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNpc). READ MORE

  4. 4. Exploring Direct Conversion of Human Glia into Therapeutic Neurons

    Author : Jessica Giacomoni; Utvecklings- och regenerativ neurobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human embryonic stem cells; glial progenitor cells; neuronal reprogramming; induced neurons; spheroids; brain slice cultures; neurodegenerative disorders;

    Abstract : Direct neuronal reprogramming of a somatic cell into therapeutic neurons, without a transient pluripotent state, provides new promise for the large number of individuals afflicted by neurodegenerative diseases or brain injury. This approach could be potentially applied directly in the brain by targeting resident cells as a source of new neurons. READ MORE
