  1. 1. Experimental studies of human-computer interaction : working memory and mental workload in complex cognition

    Author : Erik Wästlund; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Information processing; Problem-solving; Working memory; ST-WM; LT-WM; Dual-task; Mental workload; Reading; Page layout; VDT; Convergent; Divergent; Psykologi; Psychology; Information processing; Problem-solving; Working memory; ST-WM; LT-WM;

    Abstract : Complex cognition is readily described as cognitive tasks requiring the coordination of multiple steps of processing or tasks exceeding short term memory capacity. Similarly, mental workload may be described as the use and temporary expenditure of a finite amount of information processing capacity. READ MORE

  2. 2. Office illness : the worker, the work and the workplace

    Author : Berndt Stenberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sick Building Syndrome; Indoor Air Syndrome; facial skin symptoms; constitutional factors; psychosocial factors; indoor air quality; outdoor air flow rate; electromagnetic conditions; VDT work;

    Abstract : The work started with the clinical observations in patients working in buildings with indoor air problems. Signs of seborrhoeic dermatitis, erythematous facial skin conditions and itching conditions on the trunk were noted. Another point of departure was the attribution of facial skin symptoms to VDT work by patients. READ MORE

  3. 3. Office work and physical factors : health aspects of electromagnetic fields and light

    Author : Monica Sandström; Kjell Hansson Mild; Gunnar Nordberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Facial skin symptoms; office illness; electrical hypersensitivity; physical environment; flicker; jitter; neurophysiological effects;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis is to increase our knowledge of the physical environment of office workers with special focus on electromagnetic fields and to address the question of whether electromagnetic fields can directly or indirectly contribute to symptoms or discomfort among video display terminal ( VDT) workers. Furthermore, we have measured light modulation from various commonly used light sources in laboratory conditions and, as a second step, used modulated light as stimulus for provocation of neurophysiological responses in persons with perceived “electrical hypersensitivity” (EHS). 4. 4. Quantitative sensory testing, obstructive sleep apnea and peripheral nervous lesions

    Author : Louise Hagander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska institutet Institutionen för klinisk neurovetenskap Department of Clinical Neuroscience; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE;

    Abstract : In diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies, quantitative sensory testing (QST) is used to assess thermal and vibration sensitivity. QST is a psychophysical method susceptible to the influence of several factors. It is important to standardize the test. Vibrations may cause peripheral nerve lesions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Lighting Design in Computerised Offices

    Author : Annika Kronqvist; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the design of the artificially lighted environment in computerised offices. Its aim is to describe which kind of lighting solution is best suited to accommodate VDT-based tasks, and whether or not working in front of a VDT affects visual comfort and well-being. READ MORE
