  1. 1. Characteristics of Vertical Forest Backscatter Profiles Measured using Radar Tomography

    Author : Patrik Bennet; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Forest remote sensing; L-band; above-ground biomass; P-band; vertical reflectivity profiles; radar tomography; temporal backscatter variations;

    Abstract : Forests are an integral part of the Earth’s climate system, having shaped the conditions of life throughout millions of years, but the coverage and conditions of forests are under rapid change. To monitor this change and predict the impact on climate, yearly global mapping of forest Above-Ground Biomass (AGB) is needed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Environmental Effects of Agricultural Expansion in the Upper Amazon : A study of river basin geochemistry and hydrochemistry, and farmers' perceptions

    Author : Lina Lindell; Mats Åström; Marianne Henningsson; Pasi Peltola; Tommy Claesson; Michael E McClain; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : tropical humid forest; deforestation; land-use change; slash-and-burn agriculture; spatial variation; vertical distribution; multielement analysis; sustainable development; rural livelihoods; bosque húmedo tropical; deforestación; cambios de uso de la tierra; agricultura de tala y quema; variabilidad espacial; distribución vertical; análisis multielemental; desarrollo sostenible; cambio climático; sustentos rurales; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : In this thesis natural science is combined with environmental psychology in order to determine how deforestation and subsequent agricultural expansion in the Peruvian highland jungle has affected the natural environment and rural livelihoods. This region is part of one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth and is also exposed to high pressure from deforestation that threatens the ecosystems as well as the well-being of local populations. 3. 3. Turbulence Measurements in a Natural Convection Boundary Layer and a Swirling Jet

    Author : Abolfazl Shiri; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; swirl; constant current bridge; high Rayleigh number; natural convection; Jet; cold-wire thermometry; vertical cylinder; laser Doppler anemometry; turbulent boundary layers;

    Abstract : Two sets of experimental measurement were carried out on an axisymmetric swirling jet flow and a natural convection boundary layer. In the first experiment, the far field of an incompressible swirling jet, discharged into a quiescent ambient has been studied using laser Doppler anemometry. READ MORE

  4. 4. Hydrodynamics and Heat Transfer in Vertical Falling Films with Smooth and Modified Heat-Transfer Surfaces – An Experimental and Numerical Investigation

    Author : Anders Åkesjö; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []

    Author : Sebastian Buntin; Alireza Malehmir; Christopher Juhlin; Michał Malinowski; Raymond Durrheim; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wide-angle reflection refraction seismic; near-vertical incidence seismic; Moho; crust-mantle boundary; saucer-shaped sill; BABEL; FENNOLORA; UPPLAND; Fennoscandian Shield; Bergslagen; Uppland Batholith; Geofysik med inriktning mot fasta jordens fysik; Geophysics with specialization in Solid Earth Physics;

    Abstract : Lithospheric structures in the Fennoscandian Shield in Sweden have been studied by a number of large-scale wide-angle seismic reflection/refraction (WARR) and normal-incidence reflection profiles since the 1960s. Among these were the over 2000 km long Fennoscandian Long Range (FENNOLORA) project in 1979 and the Baltic and Bothnian Echoes from the Lithosphere (BABEL) in 1989, which provided valuable images of the subsurface down to over 60 km depth including the Moho.
