    Abstract : Background Animal models can be used to mimic human conditions of psychopathology, and also as pre-clinical models to evaluate candidate drugs. With hormonal treatment it is possible to produce behavior in the rat which corresponds to the mental symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), and pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). READ MORE

  2. 2. Hormones, Mood and Cognition

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Kristiina Kask; Uppsala universitet.; [2008]
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; startle response; prepulse inhibition; premenstrual dysphoric disorder; menstrual cycle; pregnancy; postpartum period; episodic memory; semantic memory; working memory; progesterone; estradiol; allopregnanolone.; VETERINARY MEDICINE Obstetrics and gynaecology; VETERINÄRMEDICIN Obstetrik och gynekologi;

    Abstract : Ovarian steroid hormones are neuroactive steroids with widespread actions in the brain, and are thus able to influence mood, behavior and cognition. In this thesis the effects of progesterone withdrawal and the direct effects of the progesterone metabolite allopregnanolone are evaluated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Sex and stress steroid modulation of GABA mediated chloride ion flux in rat CNS

    University dissertation from Umeå : Klinisk vetenskap

    Author : Jessica Strömberg; Umeå universitet.; [2007]
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; allopregnanolone; chloride ion uptake; patch-clamp; 3beta-steroids; kinetic parameters; rat brain; VETERINARY MEDICINE Obstetrics and gynaecology; VETERINÄRMEDICIN Obstetrik och gynekologi;

    Abstract : Background: Sex and stress steroids are metabolized to 3a-hydroxy-pregnane-steroid metabolites such as allopregnanolone (Allo) and tetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone (THDOC). Allo and THDOC are neuroactive steroids that are metabolized in the brain and act in brain as potent positive GABAA receptor function modulators. READ MORE

  4. 4. Healthy women or risk patients? Non-attendance in a cervical cancer screening program

    University dissertation from Institutionen för klinisk och experimentell medicin

    Author : Marie Oscarsson; Linköpings universitet.; Linköpings universitet.; [2007]

  5. 5. Effects of neuroactive steroids on the recombinant GABAA receptor in Xenopus oocyte

    University dissertation from Umeå : Medicinsk fakultet

    Abstract : Introduction: Neuroactive steroids represent a class of both synthetic and naturally occurring steroids that have an effect on neural function. In addition to classical genomic mechanism by the hormones progesterone, deoxycorticosterone and testosterone 3α-OH metabolites of these hormones enhance GABAA receptor through rapid non-genomic mechanism.
