  1. 1. Novel functions of cardiovascular P2 receptors

    Author : Anna-Karin Wihlborg; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet; mRNA; EDHF; UTP; UDP; ADP; ATP; P2 receptor; contraction; dilatation; endothelial cells; Heart; VSMC;

    Abstract : The aim of the thesis was to examine the expression and function of the extracellular nucleotide P2 receptors in the cardiovascular system. In the cardiovascular system nucleotides are released during shear stress, hypoxia, ischemia, from endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, aggregating platelets, inflammatory cells and erythrocytes. 2. 2. Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype - Implications for vascular disease states

    Author : Azra Alajbegovic; Molekylär kärlfysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vascular smooth muscle cells VSMC ; cell phenotype; microRNA; Aneurysm; hypertension; Actin polymerization; GATA6; MRTFA; Vascular disease;

    Abstract : As the world population is pushing toward 8 billion, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death worldwide, representing 30% of all global deaths. A large body of work has recognized that smooth muscle cells (SMCs) surrounding the blood vessels play a prominent role in the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulation of the vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype

    Author : Henrik Lindskog; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; angiogenesis; embryonic stem cells; vascular smooth muscle cell; smooth muscle cell; pericyte; phenotypic modulation; lipoma preferred partner; ectra-cellular matrix; zinc finger protein 148;

    Abstract : Smooth muscle cells (SMC) are present in many internal organs such as the blood vessels and the gastrointestinal channel. Their main functions are to provide stability to the tissue and to provide contractile capability. SMC are not terminally differentiated but can switch between several phenotypes, which is also known as phenotypic modulation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides

    Author : Cristina Ciornei; Sektion II; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Cardiovascular system; vascular smooth muscle; sepsis; nitric oxide; human antimicrobial peptide LL-37; Antimicrobial peptides; lipopolysaccharide; bactericidal permeability-increasing protein;

    Abstract : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). 5. 5. Tumor angiogenesis. Regulation of mural cell recruitment and endothelial sprouting

    Author : Alexandra Abramsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Angiogenesis; tumor; retina; PDGF; VEGF; platelet-derived growth factor; guidance; vascular endothelial growth factor.;

    Abstract : The formation of new blood vessels is an inherent part of many physiological and pathological processes. Currently, there is a strong hope pathological situations like stroke, diabetic retinopathy and cancer may be affected by pharmacological regulators of blood vessel formation. READ MORE
