  1. 1. Macro- and microvascular complications of diabetes: Studies on NFAT (Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells) as a novel target for the treatment of atherosclerosis and vascular dysfunction in diabetes

    Author : Fabiana Blanco; Diabetiska komplikationer; []
    Keywords : NFAT; VSMCs; Diabetes; Hyperglycemia; Aterosclerosis; Diabetic retinopathy; Oxidative stress;

    Abstract : Diabetes is associated with devastating chronic complications including coronary heart disease and stroke (macrovascular complications) as well as microvascular disorders leading to damage of the small vessels and the development of retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. The underlying pathogenesis is not clear, but hyperglycemia has been identified as an important risk factor. READ MORE

  2. 2. Regulation and actions of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins in vascular smooth muscle cells

    Author : Thomas Gustafsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) has multiple actions on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMCs) function. In the circulation and in extracellular fluids, IGF-I is complexed to high affinity IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs), which modulate IGF-I bioactivity. The present study focused on expression and regulation of IGFBPs in VSMCs. READ MORE

  3. 3. CADASIL : a pure model for studying cerebral small vessel disease

    Author : Mahmod Panahi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarct and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is caused by a mutation on the NOTCH3 gene. The pathological driver behind this disease is the loss of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in small blood vessels and subsequent fibrotic thickening of the vessel, causing stenosis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Transcriptional control in the vascular wall. Actin-responsive coactivators and smooth muscle transcripts

    Author : Katarzyna Krawczyk; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally. In the European Union (EU) alone, CVD accounts for 1.8 million deaths each year. CVD is a group of disorders involving the heart and the blood vessels. READ MORE

  5. 5. Action and interaction of growth factors and regulatory molecules in vascular cells : With special reference to the IGF-I-system

    Author : Gunilla Dahlfors; Anna Hultgårdh-Nilsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Vascular function is greatly influenced by growth factors and regulatory molecules that can interact with each other in a complex pattern in the vascular wall. In this thesis we studied how different substances of special interest in the pathogenesis of vascular disease interact and regulate each other's expressions in endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs).
