  1. 1. Temperature effects on UV-B induced DNA damage and repair in plants and a lichen

    Author : Markus Paulsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Tobacco Nicotiana tabacum ; Temperature; Subarctic; Plants; Photoreactivation; Photolyase; Lichen; DNA damage; Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers CPD ; 6-4 Photoproducts; Cladonia arbuscula ssp. mitis; Ultraviolet radiation; UV-B; Vaccinium vitis-idaea; Plant genetics; Växtgenetik;

    Abstract : All living organisms have DNA and since DNA is essential to life it must be repaired when damaged. UV radiation is one of the major DNA damaging agents, which photosynthetic organisms cannot avoid. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nitrogen, parasites and plants : key interactions in boreal forest ecosystems

    Author : Joachim Strengbom; Lars Ericson; Gaius R Shaver; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Critical loads; Deschampsia flexuosa; amino acids; mycorrhizal fungi; natural enemies; N deposition; N limitation; vegetational composition; Valdensia heterodoxa; Vaccinium myrtillus;

    Abstract : In the work described in this thesis I studied how increases in nitrogen (N) inputs may affect plant community structure in boreal forest understorey vegetation. These phenomena were investigated in N fertilization experiments and along a national N deposition gradient. READ MORE

  3. 3. Long and short term effects of stump harvesting on saproxylic beetles and ground flora

    Author : Jon Andersson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Research on the effects from forest management on biodiversity has been going on for decades but still there are many questions unanswered. With every introduction of a new forestry method there is risk for increased pressure on biodiversity. The harvesting of low stumps left after final harvesting is a relatively new method used in forestry. READ MORE

  4. 4. Retention forestry as a conservation measure for boreal forest ground vegetation

    Author : Samuel Johnson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The boreal forest is prone to natural disturbances, especially fire. Despite this, the disturbance caused by forest management is shown to have a severe effect on the system’s biodiversity. READ MORE

  5. 5. Interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and vegetation in the Fennoscandian tundra

    Author : Jonas Dahlgren; Lauri Oksanen; Johan Olofsson; John Terborgh; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gray-sided voles; tundra vegetation; trophic cascades; plant-herbivore interactions; bilberry; plant communities; herbivory; plant resistance; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Abstract : I have, in this thesis, studied the interactions between gray-sided voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus) and tundra vegetation, on islands in, and mainland sites close to the lake Iešjávri, in northern Norway. As isolated islands are virtually free of predation, I have been able to compare plant-herbivore interactions in the presence and absence of predators. READ MORE
