1. Distributed thermal response tests : New insights on U-pipe and Coaxial heat exchangers in groundwater-filled boreholes
Abstract : U-pipe Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHE) are widely used today in ground source heating and cooling systems in spite of their less than optimal performance. This thesis provides a better understanding on the function of U-pipe BHEs and Investigates alternative methods to reduce the temperature difference between the circulating fluid and the borehole wall, including one thermosyphon and three different types of coaxial BHEs. 2. Sustainability of Social Housing in the Urban Tropics: A Holistic Development Process for Bamboo-Based Construction
Abstract : This thesis is motivated by a tremendous need for more inclusive, sustainable and disaster resistant social housing in rapidly developing countries such as the Philippines. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda name the use of local raw materials as one area for action. READ MORE

3. Improving productivity in construction: a contractor perspective
Abstract : Improving productivity in construction has been a lengthy battle. Several debates, articles, reports and books have acknowledged that productivity in construction must be improved. Numerous theoretical and practical solutions to improve productivity have been developed over time both in academia and in practise. READ MORE

4. Shaping Future Opportunities for Biomass Gasification - The Role of Integration
Abstract : A considerable number of studies indicate that biofuels produced from lignocellulosic biomass will most probably play a significant role in achieving the climate goals stated in the Paris agreement. Several candidate technologies could be implemented to produce these fuels, and one of the most promising is thermal gasification. READ MORE

5. Structural Control and Identification of Civil Engineering Structures
Abstract : In general, the main purpose of a structural control system is to apply powerful control techniques that improve the behaviour of civil structures under various kinds of dynamic loading. The first part of this thesis presents novel applications of posicast and input shaping control schemes that have never previously been applied in the field of structural control. READ MORE
