1. Using direct manipulation for real-time structural design exploration
Abstract : Before a new structure can be built, it must be designed. This design phase is a very important step in the building process. The total cost of the structure and its structural performance are largely dependent on the structural design process. The impact of decisions on the design process is initially high and declines as the design matures. READ MORE

2. Tunable superconducting resonators, subharmonic oscillations and manipulation of microwaves
Abstract : In this thesis I present different types of manipulations of microwave fields using tunable superconducting resonators. A resonator is made tunable by adding one or more superconducting quantum interference devices, SQUIDs. The SQUID consists of a superconducting loop with two Josephson junctions and acts as a tunable nonlinear inductor. READ MORE

3. Sexual conflict and selection on pistil and pollen traits
Abstract : The incidence of sexual selection in plants is today acknowledged, however, just as in animals, evolution and maintenance of mate choice is gravely underexplored. Moreover, the potential for sexual conflicts to occur in plants has only been assessed empirically to a very limited degree. READ MORE

4. Spin momentum transfer effects for spintronic device applications
Abstract : The recent discovery that a spin-polarized current can exert a large torque on a ferromagnet, through direct transfer of spin angular momentum, offers the possibility of electrical current controlled manipulation of magnetic moment in nanoscale magnetic device structures. This so-called spin torque effect holds great promise for two applications, namely, spin torque oscillators (STOs) for wireless communication and radar communication, and spin transfer torque RAM (STT-RAM) for data/information storage. 5. Development of Methods for Protein and Peptide Analysis Applied in Neuroscience Utilizing Mass Spectrometry
Abstract : This thesis describes the utilization of the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) and electrospray ionization (ESI) MS techniques for analysis of complex brain tissue samples. Direct molecular profiling of biological samples using MALDI MS is a powerful tool for identifying phenotypic markers. READ MORE
