  1. 1. Stress response and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum

    Author : Barbara Weber; Debra L. Milton; James D. Oliver; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrio anguillarum; quorum sensing; Type VI secretion; stress response; virulence; skin colonization; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO. 2. 2. Cell-to-cell communication and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum

    Author : Kristoffer Lindell; Debra Milton; Karl Klose; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vibrio anguillarum; quorum sensing; stress response; keratocyte; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Quorum sensing (QS) is a type of cell-to-cell communication that allows the bacteria to communicate via small molecules to coordinate activities such as growth, biofilm formation, virulence, and stress response as a population. QS depends on the accumulation of signal molecules as the bacterial population increases. READ MORE

  3. 3. VanT, a central regulator of quorum sensing signalling in Vibrio anguillarum

    Author : Antony Croxatto; Debra Milton; Edward G Ruby; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibriosis; Vibrio anguillarum; quorum sensing; two-component phosphorelay systems; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Many bacteria produce signal molecules that serve in a cell-to-cell communication system termed quorum sensing. This signalling system allows a bacterial population to co-ordinately regulate functions according to their cell number in a defined environment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Roles of secreted bacterial factors in modulation of host cell signalling

    Author : Eric Toh; Sun Nyunt Wai; Teresa Frisan; Staffan Bohm; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteria-host interaction; motility-associated killing factor A; outer membrane vesicles; cytolysin A; phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate 5-kinase alpha; enhancer of zeste homologue 2; epigenetic modulation; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Pathogenic bacteria employ several secretion systems to release or inject virulence factors that may alter host cell processes, generate a replicative niche, and aid bacterial survival in adverse environments. This thesis presents my investigations on how bacterial factors can modulate host cell signalling mechanisms. READ MORE
