1. Advances in DNA Detection
Abstract : DNA detection technologies have an increasing importance in our everyday lives, with applications ranging from microbial diagnostics to forensic analysis, food safety evaluation, and environmental monitoring. Currently, as the associated costs decrease, DNA diagnostic techniques are routinely used in research laboratories, in clinical and forensic practice. READ MORE

2. Visual and magnetic detection of antimicrobial resistance genes using nanoparticles and isothermal amplification
Abstract : Antibiotic resistance is becoming an increasing concern, necessitating new ways to diagnose and treat it rapidly and accurately. One proposed solution is the use of nucleic acid amplification tests, capable of detecting resistance in just a few hours, as opposed to the several days that traditional testing methods may require. 3. Charged Polymers: From DNA to Polyampholytes
Abstract : Three main themes are outlined in this thesis: Polyelectrolytes/DNA : In a living cell, DNA molecules have a compact conformation in order to fit in, while in a test tube they will take on an expanded cylindrical shape, due to the negative phosphate groups along the DNA molecule. With the help of computer simulations it has been shown that like-charged monomers of a poly- electrolyte can attract each other if the counterions are taken into account. READ MORE

4. Methods for Analyzing Genomes
Abstract : The human genome reference sequence has given us a two‐dimensional blueprint of our inherited code of life, but we need to employ modern‐day technology to expand our knowledge into a third dimension. Inter‐individual and intra‐individual variation has been shown to be larger than anticipated, and the mode of genetic regulation more complex. READ MORE

5. DNA Tools and Microfluidic Systems for Molecular Analysis
Abstract : Improved methods are needed to interrogate the genome and the proteome. Methods with high selectivity, wide dynamic range, and excellent precision, capable of simultaneously analyzing many biomolecules are required to decipher cellular function. This thesis describes a molecular and microfluidic toolbox designed with those criteria in mind. READ MORE
