6. Pigment and Thiamine Dynamics in Marine Phytoplankton and Copepods
Abstract : Based on a field study and several mesocosm experiments, I evaluated the use of pigments as chemotaxonomical biomarkers for phytoplankton community composition in the Baltic Sea and I examined effects of inorganic nutrients on the dynamics of carotenoids and thiamine (vitamin B1) at the phytoplankton–copepod level in marine pelagic food webs. My results show that HPLC pigment analysis combined with CHEMTAX data processing was an accurate alternative to microscopic analysis of Baltic Sea phytoplankton. READ MORE

Abstract : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Abstract : The first part of this thesis is about the development of a method to inject various substances into the yolk of fish eggs. The method was named nanoinjection and enabled the injection of volumes as small as 10-9 L into the yolk of single fish eggs directly after fertilization, with insignificant mortality due to the injection. Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate if naturally produced hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) are causing negative health effects for Baltic Sea wildlife.
