  1. 1. Environmental management of water systems under uncertainty

    Author : Christian Baresel; Georgia Destouni; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Keith Beven Beven; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Water Resources Engineering; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : Hydrological drainage/river basins constitute highly heterogeneous systems of coupled natural and anthropogenic water and pollutant flows across political, national and international boundaries. These flows need to be appropriately understood, quantified and communicated to stakeholders, in order to appropriately guide environmental water system management. READ MORE

  2. 2. In the Pipe or End of Pipe? : Transport and Dispersion of Water-borne Pollutants and Feasibility of Abatement Measures

    Author : Christoffer Carstens; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Auli Niemi; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; NATURAL SCIENCES; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Contaminant transport modelling; Groundwater; Dispersion; Wave power; Eutrophication;

    Abstract : Eutrophication is one of the key environmental problems of today, both in terms of complexity and magnitude. For the Baltic Sea (BS), eutrophication is an acute problem, leading to hypoxic conditions at the bottom; a situation that is sustained and amplified, when phosphorus is released from hypoxic sediments. 3. 3. Land-Sea Interactions in the Coastal-Marine System of the Baltic Sea under Hydro-Climatic Variability

    Author : Yuanying Chen; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Carmen Prieto; Marco Marani; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; NATURVETENSKAP; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; NATURAL SCIENCES; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Baltic Sea; nutrient loads; hydro-climatic variability; hydrodynamics; solute transport; water quality.; Mark- och vattenteknik; Land and Water Resources Engineering;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates a few important component processes for understanding and quantifying eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, that include characterization of nutrient loadings from land, water flow in the sea under changing climate conditions and transport of solutes originating from different locations along the coast. Furthermore, this study aims to improve our understanding on how processes from land (the nutrient loading conditions) and the sea (transport dynamics and water quality) couple to determine the fate of nutrients in the sea and the water quality in a selected localized coastal area, the Himmerfjärden Bay. 4. 4. Hydrodynamic control of retention in heterogeneous aquifers and fractured rock

    Author : Hua Cheng; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Chin-Fu Tsang; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Aquifer; Fracture; groundwater; First-order solution; Monte-Carlo simulation; Nu-clear waste; Heterogeneity; Retention processes; Matrix diffusion; Prediction; Evaluation; Travel time; Flow rate; ; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, fluid flow and solute transport in heterogeneous aquifers and particularly in frac-tured rock have been investigated using Lagrangian Stochastic Advective-Reaction (LaSAR) framework. The heterogeneity of the aquifer structure or fracture configuration, as well as the various reaction/retention processes have been considered in the modelling approach. READ MORE

  5. 5. Stochastic analysis of fluid flow and tracer pathways in crystalline fracture networks

    Author : Andrew Frampton; Vladimir Cvetkovic; Allen Shapiro; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Groundwater; Fractured media; Transport; Retention; Macrodispersion; Lagrangian formulation; Stochastic modelling; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Hydrology; Hydrologi; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Understanding groundwater flow systems and how these control transport is an essential part in assessing the suitability of subsurface environments as hosts for storage of toxic waste. Therefore it is important to be able to integrate knowledge obtained from field characterisation of the subsurface with methods which can be used to evaluate and predict possible impact on surrounding environments.
