1. Volatile organic compounds from microorganisms : identification and health effects
Abstract : Damp building materials are subjected to degradation processes due to moisture and also microbial growth, with both of these giving rise to emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may contribute to indoor air health problems. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate emissions of reactive and non-reactive VOCs from damp building materials and from the microorganisms growing on them, and also to investigate the possible health impact of these compounds. 2. Thin films for indoor air monitoring : Measurements of Volatile Organic Compounds
Abstract : Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the indoor air have adverse effects on the dwellers residing in a building or a vehicle. One of these effects is called sick building syndrome (SBS). READ MORE

3. From hydrothermal carbonization to blue hydrochars and activated carbons : Adsorption of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals
Abstract : Hydrothermal carbonization of carbohydrate and biomass is a straightforward method for preparing hydrochars at low temperature. Hydrochars are more carbonized than their precursors. Hydrochars themselves are carbon precursors for preparing activated carbons. Activated carbons are porous materials that can be used for water and air purification. READ MORE

4. Microbes Associated with Hylobius abietis : A Chemical and Behavioral Study
Abstract : This thesis is based on three inter-related studies: the first part deals with the microbial consortium, the identification of microbes and their volatiles, the second part deals with the study of bio-chemical control methods of two conifer pests; the pine weevil Hylobius abietis (L.) and the root rot fungi Heterobasidion spp. READ MORE

5. Seasonal and Long-Term Storage of Baled Municipal Solid Waste
Abstract : Baling of MSW has been extensively used in Sweden and other countries for the storage of energy (biomass for energy) for incineration and production of either and or electricity and heat. Baling is performed in two principally different ways, leading to cylindrical- or rectangular bales. READ MORE
