  1. 1. Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Modifying Ion Channel Voltage Gating

    Author : Sara Börjesson; Fredrik Elinder; Klaus Benndorf; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Voltage-gated ion channels play fundamental roles in neuronal excitability and therefore dysfunctional channels can cause disease. Epilepsy is such a disease, affecting about 1% of the population and being characterized by synchronous electric activity of large groups of neurons leading to various types of seizures. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modeling of voltage-gated ion channels

    Author : Pär Bjelkmar; Erik Lindahl; Toby W. Allen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular modeling; Molecular dynamics; Voltage-gating; Ion channels; Protein structure prediction; Chemistry; Kemi; biokemi; inriktning teoretisk kemi; Biochemistry with Emphasis on Theoretical Chemistry;

    Abstract : The recent determination of several crystal structures of voltage-gated ion channels has catalyzed computational efforts of studying these remarkable molecular machines that are able to conduct ions across biological membranes at extremely high rates without compromising the ion selectivity. Starting from the open crystal structures, we have studied the gating mechanism of these channels by molecular modeling techniques. READ MORE

  3. 3. Membrane Induced Structure in Transmembrane Signaling Proteins and Peptides : Peptide–Lipid Interactions Studied by Spectroscopic Methods

    Author : Sofia E. Unnerståle; Lena Mäler; Jason Schnell; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peptide-lipid interaction; paddle domain; voltage gating; voltage sensor domain; micelle; phospholipid bicelle; solution structure; HAMP domain; nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; circular dichroism spectroscopy; nonspecific interaction; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : Biological membranes, defining the boundary of cells and eukaryotic organelles, are mainly composed of lipids and membrane proteins. Interactions between these lipids and proteins are needed to preserve the tight seal of the membrane, but also to induce structure for proper function in many membrane proteins. READ MORE

  4. 4. NMR Investigations of Peptide-Membrane Interactions, Modulation of Peptide-Lipid Interaction as a Switch in Signaling across the Lipid Bilayer

    Author : Sofia Unnerståle; Lena Mäler; Göran Widmalm; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peptide-lipid interaction; membrane mimetic; NMR; biophysics; Molecular biophysics; Molekylär biofysik; biofysik; Biophysics;

    Abstract : The complexity of multi cellular organisms demands systems that facilitate communicationbetween cells. The neurons in our brains for instance are specialized in this cell-cellcommunication. READ MORE

  5. 5. Polymer brush functionalised nanopore sensors

    Author : Julia Järlebark; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; polymer brushes; nanopore sensing; nanofabrication;

    Abstract : Single-molecule studies on proteins could reveal a lot of information about their conformational dynamics, and processes such as misfolding and aggregation. This knowledge is valuable in providing a deeper understanding of molecular biology, and for understanding the link between proteins and various diseases. READ MORE
