  1. 1. Exploring Road Traffic Interactions Between Highly Automated Vehicles and Vulnerable Road Users

    Author : Victor Fabricius; Pontus Wärnestål; Jonas Andersson; Barry Brown; Högskolan i Halmstad; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Automated driving system; Vulnerable road user; Traffic interaction; User Experience;

    Abstract : Understandings of road traffic interactions are largely based on human-human interactions. However, the development of vehicles controlled by highly auto- mated driving systems (ADS) would introduce a radically novel type of road user. READ MORE

  2. 2. Analyzing real-world data to promote development of active safety systems that reduce car-to-vulnerable road user accidents

    Author : Azra Habibovic; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Accident prevention; Naturalistic observation; Causation analysis; Active safety system; Vulnerable road user VRU ; Driver behavior; Functional requirements; Statistical analysis; VRU behavior;

    Abstract : The overall objective of the thesis is to explore various types of real-world road traffic data and to assess the extent to which they can inform the design of active safety systems that aim to prevent car-to-vulnerable road user (VRU) accidents. A combined analysis of in-depth and police reported accident data provided information on driver behavior and contextual variables, which is valuable for the development of active safety systems. 3. 3. Reduction of Vulnerable Road User accidents in urban intersections: Needs and challenges in designing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

    Author : Azra Habibovic; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; vulnerable road user; warning; functional requirement; causation; intersection; accident prevention; advanced driver assistance system; infrastructure-car cooperation;

    Abstract : Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) can be used to prevent accidents, or to reduce their severity. It is essential to determine what functional requirements such systems should fulfill to meet drivers’ support needs. An understanding of the underlying contributing factors and context in which the accidents occur is therefore crucial. READ MORE

  4. 4. Drivers overtaking cyclists and pedestrians: Modeling road-user behavior for traffic safety

    Author : Alexander Rasch; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; driver behavior; behavioral models; perceived safety; Overtaking; advanced driving assistance systems; traffic safety; vulnerable road users;

    Abstract : In a world aiming to shift to more sustainable modes of transportation, vulnerable road users (VRUs) like cyclists and pedestrians are still confronted with significant barriers to safety, particularly on rural roads where overtaking maneuvers represent a frequent and dangerous interaction with motorized traffic. If drivers misjudge their kinematics, even near-crashes without physical contact can harm the perceived safety of the VRU, which may decrease the willingness to continue cycling or walking on these roads. 5. 5. Safety Evaluation Using Counterfactual Simulations: The use of computational driver behavior models in crash avoidance systems and virtual simulations with optimal subsampling

    Author : Xiaomi Yang; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; conflict and crash avoidance; safety assessment; active sampling; Advanced Driver Assistance Systems; Automated Driving Systems; counterfactual simulation; scenario generation; car-to-VRU;

    Abstract : Traffic safety is a problem worldwide. In-vehicle conflict and crash avoidance systems have been under development and assessment for some time, as integral parts of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving Systems (ADS). READ MORE
