  1. 1. Structural Studies of Glutamine Synthetases – Towards the Development of Novel Antitubercular Agents

    Author : Wojciech W. Krajewski; Sherry L. Mowbray; Torsten Unge; Thomas C. Terwilliger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Structural biology; Strukturbiologi;

    Abstract : Glutamine synthetase (GS) plays an important role in nitrogen metabolism, where it catalyzes the ATP-dependent condensation of glutamate and ammonia to yield glutamine. Recent studies showed the importance of M. tuberculosis GS (MtGS) for growth and survival of the bacterium, and demonstrated its potential as a drug target. READ MORE

  2. 2. Perpetual borders : German-Polish cross-border contacts in the Szczecin area

    Author : Péter Balogh; Gunnel Forsberg; Thomas Lundén; James W. Scott; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; cross-border regional development; Polish-German border; Szczecin; national identities; border attitudes; the Other; kulturgeografi; Human Geography; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning;

    Abstract : Borderlands are often peripheral geographically, administratively, and economically. A particularly illustrative case is the Szczecin area at the border between Poland and Germany, where a large city on one side neighbours to a sparsely populated hinterland on the other. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ships, clouds, and waves : understanding ecosystems in traditional industries

    Author : Peter Gustafsson; Zsuzsanna Vincze; Sujith Nair; Llewellyn D.W. Thomas; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Ecosystems; Orchestration; Emergence; Traditional Industries; Shipbuilding; Resource Dependence Theory; Collective Action Theory; Corporate Political Activity;

    Abstract : This dissertation builds on a jointly phenomenological and theoretical approach to investigate how traditional industries face challenges related to ecosystem innovation. Phenomenologically, it investigates how innovation within the shipbuilding industry affects the activities performed by firms that have traditionally filled the role of suppliers to shipyards. 4. 4. Deployment Control of Spinning Space Webs and Membranes

    Author : Mattias Gärdsback; Anders Eriksson; Gunnar Tibert; Thomas W. Murphey; KTH; []
    Keywords : Flexible structures; space webs; membranes; solar sails; solar power systems; deployment control; optimal control; centrifugal force deployment; spin deployment; rotation-free; shell elements; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Future solar sail and solar power satellite missions require deployment of large and lightweight flexible structures in space. One option is to spin the assembly and use the centrifugal force for deployment, stiffening and stabilization. READ MORE

  5. 5. Holocene climate and environmental change in high latitudes as recorded by stable isotopes in peat deposits

    Author : Päivi Kaislahti Tillman; Steffen Holzkämper; Stefan Wastegård; Peter Kuhry; Thomas W. D. Edwards; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stable isotopes; Holocene; subarctic; climate; Sphagnum fuscum; kvartärgeologi; Quarternary Geology;

    Abstract : In this thesis, stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in α-cellulose isolated from Sphagnum fuscum moss remains were used as climate proxies. The main focus was to implement the methods in records from high latitude peatlands in the Northern Hemisphere (west-central Canada and north-eastern European Russia), reconstruct palaeoclimate of the studied regions during the Holocene, and evaluate the compatibility of results with other proxy records, especially tree-ring isotope time-series.
