1. Leukocyte scintigraphy, SPECT/CT and PET/CT in prosthetic joint infection
Abstract : Background: A known complication of arthroplasty is prosthetic joint infection (PJI). It can be challenging to diagnose and treat PJI due to the formation of a biofilm protecting the bacteria in chronic infections from the innate immune system and antibiotics. READ MORE

2. Modeling of radiative processes in organic scintillators
Abstract : This thesis presents the development of a Monte Carlo calibration of a whole body counter (WBC), consisting of four large plastic (organic) scintillators, used for determine the body burden of gamma-emitting radionuclides. A scintillator emits optical photons after energy has been deposited by an ionizing particle in the scintillator material. READ MORE

3. NO Effect on Inflammatory Reaction in Extracorporeal Circulation : Ex vivo Studies
Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is expressed in inflammatory tissues. However, NO effects are controversial in inflammation; NO is described as acting in a dose dependent manner and possess both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties. READ MORE

4. Towards a Flexible Monte Carlo Calibration of a Whole Body Counter Spectrometer System - Highlighting the Need of Increased Model Complexity for Large Plastic Scintillators
Abstract : Whole body counters, WBC, can be used for fast and accurate screening and follow-ups in the case of an emergency situation involving ionizing radiation given that the WBC calibration method is fast and versatile. A Monte Carlo model of a WBC system could meet these requirements under the condition that the model is an accurate description of the WBC system. READ MORE

5. Superabsorbent Polymers from the Cell Wall of Zygomycetes Fungi
Abstract : The present thesis presents new renewable, antimicrobial and biodegradable superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), produced from the cell wall of zygomycetes fungi. The cell wall was characterized and chitosan, being one of the most important ingredients, was extracted, purified, and converted to SAP for use in disposable personal care products designed for absorption of different body fluids.
