  1. 1. Endothelium-derived substances and regional hemodynamics in experimental hypertension

    Author : Sven-Olof Granstam; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; nitric oxide; endothelin; hypertension; rats; SHR; hemodynamics; blood pressure; blood flow; acetylcholine; carvedilol; microsphere method; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR), a model for experimental hypertension, is considered to have similarities with essential hypertension in humans. Differences between SHR and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) in the vascular response to endothelial-derived substances such as nitric oxide (NO) have been intensively studied in vitro. 2. 2. Mechanisms of opiate tolerance and dependence in the rat

    Author : Orsolya Hoffman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Drug addiction is a complex phenomenon with various biological, psychological and social causes and consequences, which belongs to the major problems of today's society. Opiates have been used and misused for thousand of years and addiction to them develops both in humans and in animals. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetic factors and the role of the NMDA receptor in pain modulation and the effect of opioids

    Author : Aida Plesan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : pain; NMDA-receptor antagonists; genetic difference; rat strain; opioids; methadone; morphine tolerance; neuropathic pain;

    Abstract : Pain perception and the response to opioid analgesics are determined by a number of factors, among which genetic variability and the activation of the NMDA-receptor for glutamate play an important role. The effects of two clinically available NMDA-receptor antagonists, ketamine (KET) and dextromethorphan (DEX), were evaluated on an animal model of acute nociception, the hot plate test, and on human experimental acute ischemic pain. 4. 4. Cardiovascular dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnea

    Author : Holger Kraiczi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obstructive sleep apnea; blood pressure; cardiac size; left ventricular function; endothelium-dependent vasodilation; forearm vascular conductance; natriuretic peptides;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses relationships between the presence or severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and blood pressure (BP) as well as other signs of cardiovascular dysfunction.In a cross-sectional investigation of a sleep laboratory cohort of 81 patients, a dose response relationship was observed between the number of apneas plus hypopneas per hour of sleep (apnea-hypopnea index, AHI; measured with polysomnography) and office systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP), daytime ambulatory DBP as well as nighttime ambulatory SBP and DBP (all ambulatory measurements taken at 20-minute intervals).
