  1. 6. Greenhouse gas fluxes between drained forested peatlands and the atmosphere - influence of nutrient status and wood ash fertilization

    Author : Maria Ernfors; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; greenhouse gases; peatlands wood; ash; nutrient status;

    Abstract : The management of peatlands for wood production involves drainage and, sometimes, fertilization with, for example, wood ash. The effects of these measures on greenhouse gas fluxes, in relation to the ... READ MORE

  2. 7. Radiocesium in the forest and forest industry, Studies on the flow, occurrence and technological enhancement of radionuclides in the forest industry with emphasis on radiocesium

    Author : Aaro Ravila; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; forestry technology; forestry; recovery; Recycling; enhancement; fallout; radiocesium; wood; ash; biofuel; Silviculture; radiation.; Skogsvetenskap; skogsbruk; skogsteknik;

    Abstract : In the aftermath of the nuclear weapons testing and as compared with agriculture, the forest industry has received relatively little attention in spite of its large-scale use of radiocesium- contaminated wood and water. After the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in 1986, numerous studies of the forest environment have been conducted with respect to radionuclide transfer through the forest ecosystem or its many components. 3. 8. Agro-industry feedstock and side stream materials for wood panel manufacturing

    Author : Nicolas Neitzel; Stergios Adamopoulos; Reza Hosseinpourpia; Thomas Walter; Heiko Thömen; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Wood-based panels are indispensable in many areas, such as the construction industry and furniture production. The intensified demand for renewable materials, rising wood prices and increasing protection zones of forest areas make the wood panel industry consider alternative raw materials. READ MORE

  4. 9. Effects of wood ash on freshwater organisms and aquatic forest ecosystems

    Author : K. Andreas Aronsson; Nils Ekelund; Thomas Palo; Olli-Pekka Penttinen; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wood ash; Euglena gracilis; Gammarus pulex; Fontinalis antipyretica; pH; alkalinity; toxicity; nutrients; first order stream; Askåterföring; Vedaska; Akvatiska näringssystem; Mineralnäring; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Wood ash application (WAA) has been recommended mainly for two reasons; i) to avoid depletion of minerals in the soil due to whole tree harvest in the forestry and ii) to mitigate harmful effects of acidification of soil and surface waters. In conclusion, the effects on terrestrial ecosystems and, especially, tree growth, can be attributed to the properties of the ash, the dose applied and the specific site at which the ash is applied. Abstract : In Sweden, extensive research is conducted to find alternative sources of energy that should partly replace the electric power production from nuclear power. With the ambition to create a sustainable system for producing energy, the use of renewable energy is expected to grow further and biofuels are expected to account for a significant part of this increase.
