1. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification
Abstract : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them. The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 2. Shaping Macroporous Ceramics : templated synthesis, X-ray tomography and permeability
Abstract : Macroporous ceramic materials have found widespread technological application ranging from particulate filters in diesel engines, tissue engineering scaffolds, and as support materials in carbon capture processes. This thesis demonstrates how the pore space of macroporous alumina can be manipulated, analysed in three-dimensions (3D) using visualisation techniques, and functionalised with a CO2-adsorbing material. 3. Multimodal and multiscale characterization of bone and bone interfaces in health and disease
Abstract : Seeing is believing. Our understanding of phenomena often involves their direct observation. However, bone architecture is challenging to visualize given its multi-level hierarchical organization. READ MORE

4. Exploring expandable microspheres as a novel pore former in gel-cast macroporous alumina
Abstract : Expandable microspheres have been explored as sacrificial templates for the production of macroporous ceramics. Concentrated alumina powder suspensions that contain expandable microspheres have been consolidated by gel-casting. READ MORE

5. Enhancing the stability of probiotics: Freeze-drying and encapsulation
Abstract : This research dives into the intricate world of freeze-drying, an essential process in pharmaceutical and probiotic industries, to better understand the factors affecting probiotic stability during storage. The process of freeze-drying and the composition of freeze-dried products significantly affect the stability of probiotics, yet factors such as the material’s encapsulation properties remain relatively unexplored, demanding further research.
