  1. 1. Lignin Conversion to Value-Added Small-Molecule Chemicals : Towards Integrated Forest Biorefineries

    Author : Omar Y. Abdelaziz; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; aromatic monomers; biorefinery; catalysis; kraft lignin; lignin depolymerization; lignin valorization; microbial conversion; renewable chemicals; techno-economic analysis;

    Abstract : Lignin is the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on Earth and has significant potential as a feedstock for industrial use. Due to its intrinsic heterogeneity and recalcitrance, lignin has been regarded as a low-value side-product in the pulp and paper industry and in second-generation biorefineries. READ MORE

  2. 2. First-principles investigations of planar defects

    Author : Lu Song; Levente Vitos; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Two types of planar defects, phase interface and stacking fault, are addressed in this thesis. The investigation is mainly carried out for stainless steels which are fundamental materials in modern society. For the phase interface, we investigate the metallic bcc/bcc and fcc/bcc phase interfaces. READ MORE

  3. 3. First-principles investigations of planar defects

    Author : Song Lu; Levente Vitos; Graeme Ackland; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Two types of planar defects, phase interface and stacking fault, are addressed in thisthesis. The first-principles exact-muffin orbitals method in combination with thecoherent-potential approximation is the main density functional theory (DFT) toolfor our studies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Synthesis and transport properties of 2D transition metal carbides (MXenes)

    Author : Joseph Halim; Michel Barsoum; Lars Hultman; Per Eklund; Johanna Rosén; Martin Magnuson; Jun Lu; Christina Birkel; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Since the isolation and characterization of graphene, there has been a growing interest in 2D materials owing to their unique properties compared to their 3D counterparts. Recently, a family of 2D materials of early transition metal carbides and nitrides, labelled MXenes, has been discovered (Ti2CTz, Ti3C2Tz, Mo2TiC2Tz, Ti3CNTz, Ta4C3Tz, Ti4N3Tz among many others), where T stands for surface-terminating groups (O, OH, and F). 5. 5. Endogenous modulators of hyperexcitability in epilepsy: electrophysiological and optogenetic delineation of neuropeptide Y mechanisms in interneurons

    Author : Marco Ledri; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; interneurons; Epilepsy; Neuropeptide Y; synaptic transmission; synaptic plasticity; electrophysiology; optogenetics;

    Abstract : Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders worldwide, affecting 1% of the general population, and is characterized by a predisposition for the generation of epileptic seizures. Despite having several different aetiologies, a common underlying cause of epilepsy seems to be an acquired imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory circuits in the brain, which leads to hyperexcitability and appearance of seizures.
