  1. 6. Thermodynamics and Kinetics in Metallurgical Processes - with a Special Focus on Bubble Dynamics

    Author : Yu Liu; Mikael Ersson; Pär Göran Jönsson; Bjoern Glaser; Joaquín B. Ordieres-Meré; Yogeshwar Sahai; Birgit Palm; Ville-Valtteri Visuri; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ladle; EAF; gas bubbling; physical modeling; mathematical modeling; thermodynamics; Skänkmetallurgi; EAF; gasbubblor; experimentell modellering; matematisk modellering; termodynamik; Teknisk materialvetenskap; Materials Science and Engineering; Metallurgical process science; Metallurgisk processvetenskap;

    Abstract : Gas stirring is commonly used in the steelmaking processes to reinforce chemical reactions, kinetic transfer, and inclusion removal, etc. This dissertation concentrates on multiphase flows with gas bubbling to study fluid dynamics and thermodynamics in metallurgical processes. 2. 7. Using an Artificial Ecosystem to Understand Living Ecosystems

    Author : Yu Liu; David Sumpter; Philip Gerlee; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematical Biology; Mathematical Modeling; Emergence; Ecosystem Evolution; Community Ecology; Mathematics with specialization in Applied Mathematics; Matematik med inriktning mot tillämpad matematik;

    Abstract : Community ecosystems at very different levels of biological organization often have similar properties. Coexistence of multiple species, cross-feeding, biodiversity and fluctuating population dynamics are just a few of the properties that arise in a range of ecological settings. READ MORE

  3. 8. High-Performance Building Design and Decision-Making Support for Architects in the Early Design Phases

    Author : Juan Ren; Ivo Martinac; Yu Liu; Angela Sasic Kalagasidis; KTH; []
    Keywords : High-performance building HPB ; sustainable performance; design decision making; building environmental assessment BEA tools; architects; design decision elements; sources of inspiration;

    Abstract : Based on the design decision making process from an architect’s point of view, a related literature review, theoretical analyses, and inductive inferences, this thesis proposes a new interpretation of high-performance building (HPB), translates/maps criteria issues related to building environmental assessment (BEA) tools for key design decision making elements, and identifies sources of inspiration for HPB designs. This thesis intends to propose an integrated conceptual model for the design of HPBs to provide direct knowledge-based decision making support to architects in the early design phase. READ MORE

  4. 9. Mechanical and thermal stability of hard nitride coatings

    Author : Yu-Hsiang Chen; Magnus Odén; Lina Rogström; Tomasz Liskiewicz; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Hard coating’s thermal stability is essential due to the high temperature environment of high-speed cutting applications, while the phase and microstructure evolution induced by exposing the coating to high temperature affects the mechanical properties. In this thesis, the mechanical stability of arc-evaporated, hard, transition metal nitride coatings annealed at high temperature is analyzed and related to the phase and microstructure evolution. 5. 10. Anisotropic mechanical behaviors and microstructural evolution of thin-walled additively manufactured metals

    Author : Cheng-Han Yu; Johan Moverare; Ru Lin Peng; Joe Kelleher; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; hot tensile testing; slow strain rate tensile testing; creep; anisotropy; crystallographic texture evolution; deformation twinning; Varmdragprov; Dragprov med låg töjningshastighet; kryp; anisotropi; kristallografisk textur; deformationstvillingar;

    Abstract : Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a concept and method of a manufacturing process that builds a three-dimensional object layer-by-layer. Opposite to the conventional subtractive manufacturing, it conquers various limitations on component design freedom and raises interest in various fields, including aerospace, automotive and medical applications.
