  1. 1. Biochemical and genetic markers after subarachnoid haemorrhage

    Author : Ludvig Z Csajbok; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; subarachnoid haemorrhage; biochemical marker; genetic marker; outcome;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT Background: Subarachnoid haemorrhage is a devastating disease with high morbidity and mortality despite novel treatment options are available. There are no established methods to measure the brain damage occurring due to the bleed and its complications and to predict early neurological outcome of the disease. READ MORE

  2. 2. Avian Genome Evolution - Gene Expression, Gene Divergence and Sexual Dimorphism

    Author : Sara Naurin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sex chromosome; avian genome evolution; gene expression; sexual dimorphism; Z chromosome;

    Abstract : This study has focused on: (i) differences in how males and females use the genes in the genome, (ii) how sex chromosomes evolve and (iii) how the evolutionary rate of genes are affected by the chromosome on which they are located on and the gene expression level they experience. A large-scale microarray was developed for the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata and techniques were developed so that this microarray could also be used for wild passerine birds. READ MORE

  3. 3. Genetics and the Origin of Two Flycatcher Species

    Author : Thomas Borge; Glenn-Peter Saetre; Staffan Bensch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; reinforcement; reproductive isolation; Z chromosome; hybridization; mate-choice; single nucleotide polymorphism; sequence variation; sexual selection; recombination; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, different genetic tools are used to investigate pre- and postzygotic barriers to gene exchange and their role in speciation in the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) and the collared flycatcher (F. albicollis). This species complex consists of four genetically distinct clades that apparently diverged in allopatry (I). READ MORE

  4. 4. Chicken Genomics - Linkage and QTL mapping

    Author : Per Wahlberg; Leif Andersson; Ruedi Fries; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chicken; quantitative genetics; linkage map; QTL mapping; recombination; long-term selection; Z chromosome; selective sweep; SNP; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : This thesis presents results from genetic studies conducted in the chicken (Gallus gallus). The domestication of chicken is believed to have been initiated approximately 7,000 – 9,000 years ago in Southeast Asia. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Evolution of Sex Chromosomes and Dosage Compensation in Structurally Dynamic Butterfly Genomes

    Author : Lars Höök; Niclas Backström; Elina Immonen; Beatriz Vicoso; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sex chromosome evolution; Dosage compensation; Sex-biased gene expression; Faster-Z; Lepidoptera; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Dimorphic sex chromosomes have evolved independently throughout evolution from initially homologous autosomes. Recombination suppression between the sex chromosomes causes one sex chromosome to degenerate, which will influence evolution of sex-linked genes. READ MORE
