  1. 1. The Anabolic - Anti-catabolic Paradigm of Augmenting Skeletal Regeneration: A Bone Quality Perspective

    Author : Neashan Mathavan; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone fracture; Fracture healing; bone quality; Bone biomechanics; bone morphogenetic protein-7; Zoledronate; skeletal regeneration;

    Abstract : Successful fracture repair is a complex series of coordinated processes leading to regeneration of new bone to bridge the fracture site, remodelling of the newly formed bone and restoration of skeletal function. Disruption of these processes occurs in approximately 10% of all fractures and leads to delayed or failed healing requiring surgical interventions, increased complication rates, prolonged rehabilitation and high morbidity. 2. 2. Pharmacological manipulation of fracture healing and bone remodeling

    Author : Anna Kajsa Harding; Lund Ortopedi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pin-fixation; fracture healing; bone remodeling; bone graft; Bisphosphonate; BMP;

    Abstract : Drug treatment has been and will continue to be a successful method in modern medicine that can change the course of a disease. However, it is surprisingly seldom used in the more technically oriented orthopedic surgery. READ MORE

  3. 3. Allograft bone in hip revision: the effect of locally applied pharmacological treatment

    Author : Ola Belfrage; Lund Ortopedi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allograft bone; bone transplantation; bisphosphonate; bone morphogenetic proteins; hip revision; radiostereometric analysis;

    Abstract : The clinical success of primary hip replacement is paramount but the need for revisions will continue to increase due to the increasing number of operated individuals. In Sweden, the number of hip revisions in 2012 exceeded 2,300. During implant loosening, some of the bone in the femur is lost, which can make the revision more difficult. READ MORE

  4. 4. Enhancing bone healing through concurrent anabolic- and anti-catabolic pharmacological treatment

    Author : Per Bosemark; Lund Ortopedi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; autograft; BMP; bisphosphonate; nonunion; Masquelet;

    Abstract : Most fractures heal uneventfully but some evolve into nonunions. Autologous bone graft is the gold standard for stimulating healing. However, donor site morbidity, and limited graft supply make alternatives interesting. Bone Morphogenetic Proteins, BMPs, are growth factors involved in bone signaling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Bisphosphonates and implants in the jaw bone

    Author : Jahan Abtahi; Per Aspenberg; Agneta Marcusson; Lars Rasmusson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Insertion of metal implants in bone is one of the commonest of all surgical procedures. The success of these operations is dependent on the fixation of the implants, which, in turn, depends on the strength of the bone that holds them. READ MORE
