  1. 1. A beta-phosphoglucomutase in carbohydrate metabolism of Lactococcus lactis

    Author : Ny Qian; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; gene regulation; beta-phosphoglucomutase; maltose metabolism; lactate; metabolic engineering; alpha-phosphoglucomutase; Lactococcus lactis; Microbiology; virology; bacteriology; Biochemistry; Metabolism; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) catalyzes the reversible conversion of glucose 1-phosphate to glucose 6-phosphate. Two distinct forms of PGM have been purifed and charactierized in Lactococcus lactis growing on maltose: one specific for the alpha-isomer, and the other specific for the beta-isomer of glucose 1-phosphate. 2. 2. Implications of Heparan Sulfate and Heparanase in Inflammatory Diseases

    Author : Andreas Digre; Jin-Ping Li; Lena Kjellén; Liliana Schaefer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heparanase; Heparan sulfate; Inflammation; Inflammatory diseases; Autoimmune diseases; Amyloidosis; Reumathoid arthritis; SAA; APP; A beta; Neuroinflammation; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Biochemistry; Medicinsk biokemi; Immunologi; Immunology; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS), an unbranched sulfated carbohydrate chain, and the HS-degrading enzyme heparanase play important roles in physiological and pathological processes during all stages of life, from early embryogenesis to ageing. Accumulated information shows that HS and heparanase are involved in inflammatory processes and associated diseases, e. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fishing for small molecules to treat diabetes, from a beta cell perspective

    Author : Lipeng Ren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Maintenance of glucose homeostasis necessitates a precise control of insulin secretion. Pancreatic β cells sense fluctuation of blood glucose and secret insulin in response. However, functional β cell mass is decreased in diabetes. Here, to recover functional β cell mass, we use zebrafish as a model to perform in vivo drug discovery. READ MORE

  4. 4. Understanding secondary nucleation of the amyloid β peptide

    Author : Dev Thacker; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease AD ; A beta 1-42; Amyloid aggregation; secondary nucleation;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease associated with massive neuronal cell death during its pathology. The involvement of the amyloid β 42 (Aβ42) peptideand its role in neurotoxicity is now well established. READ MORE

  5. 5. Dynamic Sulfur Chemistry : Screening, Evaluation and Catalysis

    Author : Rémi Caraballo; Olof Ramström; Nicolas Giuseppone; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dynamic combinatorial chemistry; dynamic sulfur chemistry; thioglycoside; mutarotation; disulfide metathesis; hemithioacetal formation; 1H STD-NMR; inhibition; phosphine; Concanavalin A; beta-galactosidase; dynamic drug discovery.; Chemistry; Kemi; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; Bioorganic chemistry; Bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the design, formation and evaluation of dynamic systems constructed by means of sulfur-containing reversible reactions, in organic and aqueous media and under mild conditions. In a first part, the synthesis of thioglycoside derivatives, constituting the biologically relevant starting components of the dynamic systems, is described. READ MORE
