1. Hormonal regulation of liver and tumor growth
Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to investigate the regulatory functions of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) on liver growth, and the importance of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and the HGF receptor (Met) for growth of mesenchyme-derived tumors. The studies on different types of liver growth, measured as weight, DNA and protein content, and DNA synthesis, were performed on mice lacking the IL-6 or the TNF receptor-1 gene back-crossed to the C57bl/6 strain. 2. Food-Related Gram-Positive Bacteria: Enterotoxin A Expression in Staphylococcus aureus and a New Regulation Mechanism in Lactococcus lactis
Abstract : Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is the most common enterotoxin found in outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). Based on the amount of SEA produced, S. aureus strains were divided into two main groups, high- and low-SEA-producing strains. READ MORE

3. Kinase cascades in the regulation of glucose homeostasis
Abstract : Therapeutic strategies to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) aim at improving muscle insulin sensitivity by either directly modulating, or bypassing defective insulin signaling. Insulin induces metabolic and gene regulatory responses via PI 3-Kinase (PI3K) and Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways, respectively. READ MORE
