  1. 1. Cardiac surgery and antiplatelet therapy

    Author : Carl Johan Malm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiac surgery; Platelets;

    Abstract : Background Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and a P2Y12 inhibitor improves outcome in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In the subset of ACS patients undergoing urgent cardiac surgery, ongoing or recently discontinued DAPT is associated with increased risk of bleeding. READ MORE

  2. 2. Determination of the overall haemostasis potential and fibrin gel permeability : method development and application in research and in clinical materials

    Author : Aleksandra Antovic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Global haemostatic assays; overall haemostasis potential; hypercoagulation; hypocoagulation; thrombophilia; haemophilia; fibrin gel porosity; LMMH therapy; acetylsalicylic acid therapy;

    Abstract : We have previously developed a laboratory method that may screen the Overall Haemostasis Potential (OHP) in plasma based on spectophotometric measurement of an area under the fibrin aggregation curve in citrated plasma samples to which tiny amounts of exogenous thrombin and tissue-plasminogen activator (t-PA) are added. When the fibrin aggregation curve is created, the fibrinogen originally present in plasma is gradually converted to fibrin by the generated thrombin. READ MORE

  3. 3. Risk factors for the development of chronic renal failure : epidemiological studies on the role of analgesic use, occupational exposures and socioeconomic background

    Author : Michael Fored; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Kidney failure; chronic; Analgesics; non-narcotic; Case-control study; Risk factors; Acetaminophen; Paracetamol; Aspirin; Acetylsalicylic acid; Bias epidemiology ; Education; Socioeconomic factors; occupations; Occupational exposure; Solvents; Metals; heavy; Silicon compounds; Dust.;

    Abstract : Chronic renal failure is a severe condition that reduces life expectancy and typically progresses to end-stage renal disease and a need for renal replacement therapy. In a large proportion of cases, chronic renal failure evolves from known renal or systemic diseases, but in some cases the pathogenesis remains unknown. READ MORE

  4. 4. Eicosanoids in cancer : new therapeutic targets in neuroblastoma

    Author : Agnes Rasmuson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cancer is one of the most common causes of death for both children and adults in developed countries. Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system that affects infants and young children. Neuroblastoma tumors are the most common solid extracranial tumors in children and are also the most deadly. READ MORE

  5. 5. Platelet activation and aggregation: Clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Sukhi Singh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Platelet concentrate; Adrenaline; Noradrenaline; Ticagrelor; Platelet aggregation; Platelet activation;

    Abstract : Background: Dual antiplatelet therapy with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and the adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-receptor antagonist ticagrelor increases the risk of bleeding complications during cardiac surgery. The overall aim of this thesis was to identify and evaluate current and potential methods to reduce and prevent bleeding complications in patients with ongoing antiplatelet therapy. READ MORE
