  1. 1. Intestinal effects of lung recruitment maneuvers

    Author : Jonas Claesson; Ola Winsö; Stefan Lehtipalo; Conny Arnerlöv; Björn Biber; Göran Hedenstierna; Petter Aadahl; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acute lung injury; oleic acid lung injury; ischemia; reperfusion injury; swine; mechanical ventilation; lung recruitment; splanchnic circulation; laser Doppler flowmetry; tissue oxygen tension; microdialysis; lactate; glycerol; Anaesthetics and intensive care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Abstract : Background and aims: Lung recruitment maneuvers (brief episodes of high airway pressure) are a modern treatment alternative to achieve open lung conditions under mechanical ventilation of patients with acute lung injury. It is well known that positive pressure ventilation with high airway pressures cause negative circulatory effects, and that the effects on regional vascular beds can be even more pronounced than the systemic effects. 2. 2. FRC in acute lung injury. Experimental and clinical studies

    Author : Christian Rylander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Airway obstruction; Acute lung injury; Acute respiratory distress syndrome; Attenuation; Computed tomography; End-expiratory lung volume; Functional residual capacity; Gas dilution; Hounsfield unit; Lung volume; Oleic acid; Recruitment; Time constant;

    Abstract : Respiratory failure due to acute lung injury (ALI) of diffuse inflammatory origin is a major cause of respiratory failure treated in intensive care units. In ALI, FRC is reduced by various mechanisms associated with hypoxemia and consolidation of the lung. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mechanisms of inflammatory lung injury : Studies in isolated perfused rat lungs

    Author : Anders Ljungman; Östergötlands Läns Landsting; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Isolated perfused rat lungs (IPRLs) were used to study mechanisms andmediators of lung injury due to (i) ischemia-reperfusion (IR) and (ii) endotoxin. To investigate the role of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) in IR injury, PMNs were added to the perfusate of IPRLs subjected to IR. READ MORE

  4. 4. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in the Assessment of Respiratory Mechanics

    Author : Gaetano Perchiazzi; Göran Hedenstierna; Björn Jonson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; artificial neural networks; respiratory system compliance; respiratory system resistance; respiratory system time constant; intrinsic positive end expiratory pressure; PEEPi; animal model; acute lung injury; oleic acid; Otis model; Fysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to test the capability of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to estimate respiratory mechanics during mechanical ventilation (MV). ANNs are universal function approximators and can extract information from complex signals. READ MORE

  5. 5. The role of the endothelin system in experimental acute lung injury : with special reference to the formation of extra-vascular lung water

    Author : Patrik Rossi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Acute lung injury; endothelin-1; extra-vascular lung water; pulmonary capillary pressure; sepsis; pulmonary edema; endotoxin;

    Abstract : Acute lung injury is a major clinical challenge in the intensive care unit. Sepsis is the most frequent underlying cause of this pulmonary syndrome, which contains inflammation-induced diffuse alveolar damage and early stage high permeability edema. READ MORE
