  1. 1. Phase transformation and surface chemistry of secondary iron minerals formed from acid mine drainage

    Author : Jörgen Jönsson; Lars Lövgren; Per Persson; Staffan Sjöberg; Douglas B Kent; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inorganic chemistry; schwertmannite; goethite; lepidocrocite; acid mine drainage; sulphate; natural organic matter; mineral surface; infrared spectroscopy; EXAFS; XRD; ternary surface complex; copper II ; cadmium II ; lead II ; zinc II ; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic Chemistry; oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : The mining of sulphidic ore to extract metals such as zinc and copper produces huge quantities of waste material. The weathering and oxidation of the waste produces what is commonly known as Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), a dilute sulphuric acid rich in Fe(II) and heavy metals. READ MORE

  2. 2. Geochemical Landscape Analysis for the Risk Assessment of Acid Mine Drainage in a Wetland Environment

    Author : Andrea Szucs; Ulf Qvarfort; Richard Wanty; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Earth sciences; acid mine drainage; environmental geochemistry; landscape; risk assessment; stream; wetland; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Attenuation of acid mine drainage (AMD) metals originating from abandoned mines and waste rock dumps is investigated in this thesis at Slättberg in central Sweden, where acid mine leachate has been discharging for over 70 years into the receiving wetland stream and mire. Risk assessment of AMD and related polluted lands requires a holistic approach that is able to study the complexity of pollution emissions and impacted landscapes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Environmental aspects of coal mine drainage: a regional study of Moatize in Mozambique

    Author : Estevao Pondja; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []

    Abstract : Mozambique is one of the largest coal producers in Africa. Extraction of the coal is carried out in the Moatize district of the Tete province in the center of the country. A surface mining technique is used to extract the coal below ground level. READ MORE

  4. 4. Geochemical and Mineralogical Characterization of Waste Rocks for Preliminary Mine Drainage Quality Prediction

    Author : Teemu Karlsson; Lena Alakangas; Päivi Kauppila; Berndt Lottermoser; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mine waste characterisation; mine drainage water; ARD; NRD; aqua regia extraction; ABA test; NAG test; SEM mineralogy; sulfide minerals; risk assessment; Applied Geochemistry; Tillämpad geokemi;

    Abstract : Acid or neutral rock drainage (ARD or NRD) with its attendant elevated concentrations of harmful elements presents one of the main challenges related to the management of waste rocks. Low-quality drainage is a particular issue with respect to mineral deposits containing sulfide minerals, of which pyrite and pyrrhotite are especially prone to produce acidic drainage when exposed to oxygen and water. 5. 5. Geochemical modelling of acid mine drainage in mill tailings : Quantification of kinetic processes from laboratory to field scale

    Author : Sally Ursula Salmon; KTH; []
    Keywords : geochemistry; biogeochemistry;

    Abstract : Assessment of the potentially acidic, heavy metal-ladenleachates that leave deposits of sulfide ore mill tailings andevaluation of various possible options for mill tailingremediation are scientific problems of increasing practicalimportance. High costs may be associated with the mill tailingremediation, not least after recent changes in Swedish andEuropean environmental legislation. READ MORE
