  1. 1. The language learning infant: Effects of speech input, vocal output, and feedback

    Author : Lisa Gustavsson; Francisco Lacerda; Roger Moore; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; human; language; language acquisition; perception; production; humanoid; development; model; embodied system; speech signal processing; vocal tract morphology; acoustic; speech input; information processing; scaling; interaction; growth; infant; imitation; feedback; perceptual salience; modeling; Phonetics; Fonetik; Phonetics; fonetik;

    Abstract : This thesis studies the characteristics of the acoustic signal in speech, especially in speech directed to infants and in infant vocal development, to gain insight on essential aspects of speech processing, speech production and communicative interaction in early language acquisition. Three sets of experimental studies are presented in this thesis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Perception, Analysis and Synthesis of Speaker Age

    Author : Susanne Schötz; Fonetik; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; phonology; perceptual cues; speaker age; automatic speaker recognition; acoustic analysis; acoustic correlates; data-driven; Phonetics; formant synthesis; Fonetik; fonologi; Technological sciences; Teknik;

    Abstract : Speaker age is an important paralinguistic feature in speech which has to be considered in the study of phonetic variation. Knowledge about this feature may be used to improve speech technology applications, e.g. automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis. READ MORE

  3. 3. Forensic comparison of voices, speech and speakers : tools and methods in forensic phonetics

    Author : Jonas Lindh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; forensic phonetics; automatic voice recognition; disputed utterance; speech; language technology; phonetics;

    Abstract : This thesis has three main objectives. The first objective (A) includes Study I, which investigates the parameter fundamental frequency (F0) and its robustness in different acoustic contexts by using different measures. READ MORE

  4. 4. Acoustic Properties as Predictors of Perceptual Responses : a Study of Swedish Voiced Stops

    Author : Diana Krull; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Phonetics; Fonetik; Phonetics; fonetik;

    Abstract : In speech recognition algorithms and certain theories of speech perception the interpretation of the signal is based on " distance scores " for comparisons of the signal with stored references; in these theories, perception is seen as a product of stimulus and experience. The aim of the present thesis is to evaluate such distance measures by investigating the perceptual confusions of the Swedish voiced stops [b,d,q,g] in systematically varied fragments of vowel-consonantvowel stimuli providing 25 vowel contexts for each consonant. 5. 5. Articulatory-Acoustic Relationships in Swedish Vowel Sounds

    Author : Christine Ericsdotter; Olle Engstrand; Björn Lindblom; Peter Ladefoged; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Swedish vowels; articulatory modelling; MRI; Phonetics; Fonetik;

    Abstract : The goal of this work was to evaluate the performance of a classical method for predicting vocal tract cross-sectional areas from cross-distances, to be implemented in speaker-specific articulatory modelling. The data forming the basis of the evaluation were magnetic resonance images from the vocal tract combined with simultaneous audio and video recordings. READ MORE
