    Abstract : The ability to understand and communicate about the actions of others is a fundamental aspect of our daily activity. How can we talk about what others are doing? What qualities do different actions have such that they cause us to see them as being different or similar? What is the connection between what we see and the development of concepts and words or expressions for the things that we see? To what extent can two different people see and talk about the same things? Is there a common basis for our perception, and is there then a common basis for the concepts we form and the way in which the concepts become lexicalized in language? The broad purpose of this thesis is to relate aspects of perception, categorization and language to action recognition and conceptualization. READ MORE

  2. 2. Bring Your Body into Action : Body Gesture Detection, Tracking, and Analysis for Natural Interaction

    Author : Farid Abedan Kondori; Li Liu; Juyang Weng; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : This thesis addresses a challenging problem: “how to let the visually impaired ‘see’ others emotions”. We, human beings, are heavily dependent on facial expressions to express ourselves. A smile shows that the person you are talking to is pleased, amused, relieved etc. READ MORE

  4. 4. Highly parallel computers for artificial neural networks

    Author : Tomas Nordström; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Signalbehandling; Signal Processing;

    Abstract : During a number of years the two fields of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and highly parallel computing have both evolved rapidly. In this thesis the possibility of combining these fields is explored, investigating the design and usage of highly parallel computers for ANN calculations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of Processing on Dietary Fibre in Vegetables

    Author : Maria Svanberg; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; low molecular weight carbohydrates; carrot cultivars; molecular weight distribution; viscosity; water-soluble polysaccharides; processing; Dietary fibre; vegetables; bulking capacity; rats; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Abstract : Several beneficial effects have been connected with dietary fibre. Insoluble fibre has a good faecal bulking capacity, whereas soluble and viscous dietary fibre has been shown to have beneficial effects on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. READ MORE
