1. Properties of Activated Sludge Flocs
Abstract : The quality of the effluent from activated sludge treatment plants is highly dependent on the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process. The aim of this thesis was to study (i) the effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on effluent turbidity and flocculation, as well as on the settling properties of activated sludge, for both short term and long term scales, and (ii) the influence of aerobic microbial activity on the stability of activated sludge flocs. 2. Modeling and Control of Bilinear Systems : Application to the Activated Sludge Process
Abstract : This thesis concerns modeling and control of bilinear systems (BLS). BLS are linear but not jointly linear in state and control. In the first part of the thesis, a background to BLS and their applications to modeling and control is given. READ MORE

3. Optimization methods for sedimentation and denitrification in activated sludge
Abstract : Denitrification on readily biodegradable carbon compounds and separation of biological sludge from effluent water are examples of critical sub-processes for nitrogen removal in activated sludge. The aim of this thesis was to find operational strategies and newmethods to optimize these processes. READ MORE

4. Control of Nitrogen Removal in Activated Sludge Processes
Abstract : More stringent requirements on nitrogen removal from wastewater are the motivation for this thesis. In order to improve treatment results and enhance cost-efficient operation of wastewater treatment plants, model based control strategies are presented. A Java based simulator for activated sludge processes (JASS) is presented. READ MORE

5. Investigations of the microbial diversity and dynamics in activated sludge using molecular methods
Abstract : Wastewater treatment is necessary to reduce the health risks and environmental impacts associated with discharge of untreated wastewater. The most common way to treat wastewater in wastewater treatment plants is through the activated sludge process. READ MORE
